Failing the program meant imprisonment and permanent separation of mother and child (mostly because mothers tended to kill their children after completing their extra de-programming). Either way, the torture methods were perfected to break even the strongest love-lover.

All the members of LERN looked forward to the day when they could escape and create their own colony. No one really knew if and when that time would come. Even if the NOV hunters didn't catch them and execute them on the spot, then they'd surely die in the wilderness. Wild animals, lack of food, no clean water, and no medications to relieve effects of the plagues. Given these harsh conditions, even the strongest colony would implode, love-lovers or not.

I don't want to spoil anything for readers who have not yet picked up this book but it looks like more is going to happen in this story. I can't wait. The author has done a very good job of creating a solid three dimensional world for the reader with characters that have depth. I had expected the book to end at the very climatic scene with Martha and her husband and then a second book starting afterwards so in that way the book almost seems like two books in one."
