This guide explores the county of Cumbria. The journey starts in Kendal, and moves to Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside. From there: Keswick and Derwentwater, Ullswater and Braithwaite to Buttermere, via the Whinlatter Forest. The beautiful environment of tarns and fells opens many varied experiences for the traveler. The guide includes information and histories from local sources. It visits Cockermouth, Grasmere and Rydal Mount, Wordsworth's homeland. It documents Penrith and Carlisle, Tebay and Appleby in the expansive landscape of Westmorland and makes a wide loop over to Workington and Whitehaven on the coast. The guide then moves south to Barrow in Furness, Ireleth, Ulverston and Grange Over Sands. Leaving Cumbria for Lancashire it takes a route by High Bentham on a moorland road to find Slaidburn, a historic village set deep in the Lancashire Fells.

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. At times this is literally a step-by-step of the writers walk around town. He even mentions actions of people he passes. I’m sure this may offer something of interest to a few people, but on the whole, a person like me expecting a tourist guide... I’m not sure. I think it’s too short or trying to encompass too much?? Maybe it’s best as a written guide with pictures.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Mark Isham ) and I would listen to another. He reads this content well. Personally, I had to speed up the reading (unlike another reviewer).

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

What fun! This guide was written as the author toured the area and noted all of the fun things being done by locals and tourists alike, complete with impatient drivers and sheep wandering the road. Places and people of historical interest are presented, places to stay in various towns and villages, levels of difficulty for various rambles, and the most useful phone numbers.
Mark Isham does a fine job as narrator, but you might want to listen at a little slower speed.
