"Eva, breathe," Jarrett's voice hit me, oddly gently, though it didn't calm my breath. But suddenly, as though in an out-of-body experience, I felt the waves envelope the boat and pull us down, far below the surface. But the water was warm and comforting, and as soon as I expected fear to take over my heart, I was wrapped in a feeling of calm, even meters below the waves. My breathing slowed. Wait, I’m breathing?
Just as quickly as I had been pulled under the water, I found myself once again in the boat, still staring up at the sky, dry, breathing, and oddly relaxed. I let out a long, slow breath and sat up, clueless as to what had just happened. I turned cautiously to look at Jarrett. He was staring calmly at me, his eyes gentle and concerned. He had rested the paddles on his lap to focus on me. The gaze struck me oddly. It was completely different from the cold, distant demeanor he usually carried. A strange idea took hold of me, riding on Josh’s words from a few hours ago. "Did...did you do that?" Jarrett nodded. I stared, "What exactly did you do?" He started paddling again and looked out wearily at the island behind me. "I'll explain it to you, perhaps. Eventually."
