Acerca de esta escucha

Elizabeth Bates's latest con just might change the course of history in an all-new Counterfeit Lady Novel from USA Today bestselling author Victoria Thompson. A year has passed since Elizabeth Bates ran her last con. Life has been simpler, although not nearly as exciting, but she has thrown herself into working to get the 19th Amendment ratified by thirty-six states to become the law of the land. Since every other Southern state has already rejected the amendment, it seems unlikely Tennessee will be an exception … but it's their only hope, so the suffragists descend on Tennessee for the final battle. Elizabeth’s ability to interact with difficult men and to persuasively explain all the advantages of allowing women to vote—all skills she perfected as a grifter—have made her a valuable member of the team. But she would never have expected the lengths to which some would go to keep the vote out of women's hands. She'll need to devise the perfect con or the suffragists' life's work could all be for nothing.

Not as engaging as some other installments of this series, but fascinating look at the final state ratification of the 19th Amendment. All of the intrigues that go on in state governments are magnified a hundred fold when the women’s right to vote is at stake and it’s required decades to get there. The Old Man and Jake show up for cameos and the mysteries are mostly political. So I can understand why many listeners might mark this one down.

I still enjoyed it, although it did seem to drag in places - but just because the creation and approval of a bill requires some stultifying, repetitive steps! I think Thompson did her readers a service by showing them a picture of a moment in time in our democracy!

Good history lesson

This book was more of a detailed nonfiction with conversation among the characters thrown in. If you’re a fan of the Counterfeit Lady series (like I am) this book is nothing like the previous books. I hope Ms. Thompson goes back to the original premise or she has lost a reader.

Read like nonfiction

While the historic context is an important one. The books story line is boring snd without any actual con-action as we are used from main characters. Very disapointing.

Most boring installment

I like most of Ms. Thompson's books. But this one seemed to preach history. Had enough of that in school.

History lesson on Tennessee's Ratification of women's right to vote

The story line tends to repeat itself way to much on the topic of ratification. Not a very good con line

Lack of suspense

I've been very entertained as well as educated by the books in this series - until now. It's pretty much all politics.

Couldn't Finish This One

This was a novel of historical fiction about the final state vote for ratification of women’s suffrage. There was no con in it at all. No cleverness. I’ve read all of the gaslight and counterfeit woman series and this is the first time I have been disappointed.

No con this time

it was more of a history book then a murder mystery. i was not too impressed

too much history leson

I’ve struggled with the flexible morality of these main characters, even as I’ve enjoyed the story telling.
For those who don’t know how very difficult it was for women to gain the simple right to vote we have had for only about 100 years, it’s a must read.
Our rights are so fragile.

A well researched somewhat enjoyable history lesson

Interesting story line and many tales weaved together to make the story captivating to read

The many things that had to be over comes for women to vote
