The characters are well developed. But their connection is not. I kept going back several chapters feeling like maybe I'd missed something. Nope. All of a sudden, the main male character goes to talk to the female character and then the next conversation, they're in a relationship. it was weird and quickied.
But the worst was.... SO MANY CHARACTERS IN THIS STORY DIE (ESPECIALLY RIDICULOUSLY YOUNG) OR ARE MAIMED/permanently injured!!! Much of this is backstory and discussed in this book but there are many instances of current characters getting injured. It's like the only force throughout the book that drives the plot. I'd count 2-3 significant main characters who died very young from either a pulmonary embollism or an infection/cancer. On top of that, multiple characters mid story get hurt or injured.... A young boy falls off the water tower and is handicapped for life. Another character dies from old age. Another character gets his knee cap blown out and needs a knee replacement which is a significant hardship on the family. A little girl almost drowns and breaks multiple bones.... this
You'd think being such an experienced author, LLM could come up with a different plot driver than major deaths and medical injuries. All told, there's probably 8-10 characters in this book that die or are severely injured. That's not a sufficient plot driver or good drama. It's just depressing. That combined with the lack of a real connection between the main male and female characters, I quit the book about 3/4 through.
Poor showing from Linda Lael Miller
