Acerca de esta escucha
On the eve of Shiloh, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, a mysterious visitor appears at General William Tecumseh Sherman's camp. Without family or home, with only a uniform and the name of Jesse, this prepossessing stranger is an intriguing mix of naiveté and wisdom, ignorant of the most basic conventions of warfare yet uncannily familiar with even the most intimate details of Sherman's personal life and career. Jesse, in turn, has only one desire: to remain by Sherman's side, for reasons only Jesse knows and isn't revealing. Initially unwilling to become a father figure to this beguiling visitor, Sherman is finally unable to resist such devotion and tenacity. He takes Jesse under his wing, determined to train this enigmatic creature in the art of war, and provide the strength and wisdom needed to survive its horrors.
Resourceful and courageous, Jesse soon earns the respect of Sherman’s men, especially the compassionate but plain-talking surgeon, Seth Cartwright, and Thomas Ransom, a noble and handsome young infantry officer. No matter their destiny neither man can divert Jesse’s mission.
But what is the truth? What is Jesse’s purpose and why has this fascinating youth appeared at this most crucial time in Sherman’s life and in the life of the bitterly divided nation? In the end we are forced to ask: Who is under whose wing?
The Better Angels of Our Nature brilliantly re-creates the drama and brutality of America’s Civil War. Set in the momentous 14-month period spanning Shiloh and Vicksburg - a time that turned the tide of war and determined the nation’s fate - this harrowing, lyrically written novel is filled with unforgettable characters and wondrous twists that will give listeners pause to reconsider events familiar to us all. Meticulously researched and movingly written, this masterwork will remain with listeners long after the last sentence is savored.

The world's innovation economy is broken. If you have an idea, depending on who you are or where you live, you might never get a shot. A handful of people in a handful of cities are deciding, behind closed doors, which entrepreneurs get a shot to succeed. The determining factor? Potential profit. In The Innovation Blind Spot, venture capitalist Ross Baird demonstrates how to fix the problem by helping us find better ideas, looking at people, places, and industries often overlooked.

Historia
In 1864, after Union general William Tecumseh Sherman burned Atlanta, he marched his sixty thousand troops east through Georgia to the sea, and then up into the Carolinas. The army fought off Confederate forces and lived off the land, pillaging the Southern plantations, taking cattle and crops for their own, demolishing cities, and accumulating a borne-along population of freed blacks and white refugees until all that remained was the dangerous transient life of the uprooted, the dispossessed, and the triumphant.

They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect turned soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the US Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though war is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of love.

Historia
With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times best-selling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature's richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage.

Historia
Two mighty armies blunder toward each other, one led by confident, beloved Robert E. Lee and the other by dour George Meade. They’ll meet in a Pennsylvania crossroads town where no one planned to fight. In this sweeping, savagely realistic novel, the greatest battle ever fought on American soil explodes into life at Gettysburg. As generals squabble, staffs err. Tragedy unfolds for immigrants in blue and barefoot Rebels alike. The fate of the nation will be decided in a few square miles of fields. There are no marble statues here, only men of flesh and blood, imperfect and courageous.

Historia
The Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. In rural Arkansas, the Hancocks were devastated by that war. They not only lost everything, but experienced an unimaginable hell. How does a traumatized human being put themselves back together? Where does a person begin to heal his or her broken mind…and does one choose damnation or redemption? For the Hancock siblings: Doc, Sarah, Butler, and Billy, the American frontier becomes a metaphor for the wilderness within—raw, and capable of being shaped.

Historia
The war of 1812 would either make America a global power sweeping all the way to the Pacific or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal players in this drama were James and Dolley Madison and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America's destiny.

Authentically Coarse
War is never gentle. I'm not one to use or like to hear coarse language but I listened to the end of the book. I contemplated returning the book but stayed the course and finished. The storyline was wonderful and the narration is excellent, but Cassandra Campbell is a great narrator. I would recommend only to those who don't mind coarse language albeit mild in this book.

Audible & Google bait & switch
First, this book is a civil war era NOVEL, not the Steven Pinker non-fiction of the SAME name. Even in several online reviews of the Pinker book, this novel’s cover is displayed. So, having bought the wrong book, I decided to listen to this “historical novel of the civil war” anyway. It was dismal, and in truth, I couldn’t even finish it. I will just say this: take out all the descriptive phrases starting with “like . . .”, and the superfluous , awkward, adjectives and adverbs and you could reduce this tome by a third and improve it by -100%. (“Mustache fluttering like the feathers of a bird” comes to mind. How was this published without the help of an editor? Or did the editor just get overwhelmed and throw in the towel? Pile the terrible sophomoric writing on top of a dismal simpleminded plot layered over the battlefield. Early on I found myself wondering if maybe this was actually intended as YA (young adult) fiction, which might explain the simplistic plot and one dimensional characters, but certainly not excuse the terrible writing.
