Linda Lear
Acerca de esta escucha
In this now classic biography, Linda Lear offers the astonishing portrait of an extraordinary woman who gave us some of the most beloved children's books of all time. Beatrix Potter found freedom from her conventional Victorian upbringing in the countryside. Nature inspired her imagination as an artist and scientific illustrator, but "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" brought her fame, financial success, and the promise of happiness when she fell in love with her editor, Norman Warne. After his tragic and untimely death, Potter embraced a new life as the owner of Hill Top Farm in the English Lake District and a second chance at happiness. As a visionary landowner and a successful farmer and sheep-breeder, she was able to preserve the landscape that had inspired her art.
Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature reveals a lively, independent, and passionate woman, whose art was timeless, and whose generosity left an indelible imprint on the countryside.

Historia
Twenty thousand years ago, women were making and wearing the first clothing created from spun fibers. In fact, right up to the Industrial Revolution the fiber arts were an enormous economic force, belonging primarily to women. Despite the great toil required in making cloth and clothing, most books on ancient history and economics have no information on them. Much of this gap results from the extreme perishability of what women produced, but it seems clear that until now descriptions of prehistoric and early historic cultures have omitted virtually half the picture.

The history of Iceland began 1,200 years ago, when a frustrated Viking captain and his useless navigator ran aground in the middle of the North Atlantic. Suddenly, the island was no longer just a layover for the Arctic tern. Instead, it became a nation whose diplomats and musicians, sailors and soldiers, volcanoes and flowers, quietly altered the globe forever. How Iceland Changed the World takes readers on a tour of history, showing them how Iceland played a pivotal role in events as diverse as the French Revolution, the Moon Landing, and the foundation of Israel.

His name wasn’t Chester Nez. That was the English name he was assigned in kindergarten. And in boarding school at Fort Defiance, he was punished for speaking his native language, as the teachers sought to rid him of his culture and traditions. But discrimination didn’t stop Chester from answering the call to defend his country after Pearl Harbor, for the Navajo have always been warriors, and his upbringing on a New Mexico reservation gave him the strength to excel as a marine. This is the first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII.

Deborah's effervescent memoir chronicles her remarkable life, from an eccentric but happy childhood in the Oxfordshire countryside, to tea with Adolf Hitler and her controversially political sister Unity in 1937, to her marriage to the second son of the Duke of Devonshire.

In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica with dreams of glory. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But de Gerlache’s plans to be first to the magnetic South Pole would swiftly go awry. After a series of costly setbacks, the commandant faced two bad options: turn back in defeat and spare his men the devastating Antarctic winter, or recklessly chase fame by sailing deeper into the freezing waters.

“As Albert Einstein almost certainly never said, everyone is a genius—but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So begins Katie Spalding’s spunky takedown of the Western canon, and how genius may not be as irrefutably great as we commonly understand. While most of us may never become Einstein, it may surprise you to learn that there’s probably a bunch of stuff you can do that Einstein couldn’t. And, as Spalding shows, the famous prodigies she explores here were quite odd by any definition.

Charlotte Brontë's life contained all the drama and tragedy of the great Gothic novels it inspired. Like Jane Eyre, she was raised motherless on remote Yorkshire moors and sent away to a brutally strict boarding school at a young age. Charlotte grew up and watched helplessly as, one by one, her five beloved siblings sickened and died; by the end of her short life, she was the only child of the Brontë clan remaining.

Fascinating text and excellent narrator
For fans of Beatrix Potter, this book is a gem. It brings to light this remarkable woman's life, from childhood to old age. It emphasizes her skills as a scientific illustrator at a time when women were excluded from artistic and scientific training, and emphasizes her preeminent role in the creation of the National Trust Lands of Britain. Excellent narrator.

A Well-rounded Portrait of a Remarkable Woman
Not only is Ms. Lear's biography of Beatrix Potter clearly well-researched, well-written, and thoroughly captivating in the portrait it paints
of the remarkable artist, story-teller, naturalist, and country-woman that Miss Potter / Mrs. Heelis was, the work is beautifully presented by a reader with a voice, accent, and diction that perfectly agrees with its subject.

I love this book!
This is a must read for admirers of Beatrix Potter’s life and work. I read Linda Lear’s brilliantly researched book several years ago and and became fascinated with Beatrix Potter. I enjoyed the book immensely, and now I’m discovering it anew through this audio version. The story sheds so much light on a woman whose life well lived made an incredible difference in the lives of others, not only in her day, but well into the present.

Detailed biography of a fascinating life.
This biography skillfully uses primary sources, including extensive quotes from the subject’s correspondence, to paint a captivating portrait of a unique woman who seems have lived several lives in one lifetime. From her unhappy childhood to meticulous study and illustration of mycology, readers get insight into the experiences that led to her unexpected success as a children’s book author and illustrator. In her later years Potter married against the wishes of her overbearing parents and followed her heart to the British countryside. With her earnings from book sales, Potter purchased her own farm and went on to become a prominent land owner and one of the founding forces behind the land preservation efforts of the National Trust. Brilliantly written and read, this is the definitive biography for Potter lovers.

Educational
A well-researched book covering the details of the life of Beatrix Potter. It was an education on so many topics with a backdrop set during Victorian England through WW I and WWII. She was an astounding individual and what she accomplished in her lifetime continues to be a blessing to us today.

Plodding recitation of facts
Not sure why some readers rated this book so highly. I am literally listening to it at bedtime as an antidote to insomnia! The story is a looong, boring “just the facts, ma’am” snooze-fest. And the narrator’s highly clipped recitation makes it even less palatable. I LOVE Beatrix Potter, so I’m really disappointed that I just can’t whip up any enthusiasm for this dry biography.

Narration is difficult!
Since it was really difficult for me to get through Anne Flosnik’s narration of When Christ and His Saints Slept, I deliberated on whether I could stand listening to this reader presenting Beatrix Potter. No doubt that she is expert, but, there’s something about this narrator’s guttural, precise, fussy (prissy??) voice that I find hard to bear.
I do enjoy learning more about the family heritage, life, activism and talent of Beatrix Potter, so I’m hoping that 18 hours of this presentation will be tolerable. I respect the obvious talent and dedication of both this author and narrator, so, I’m rooting for myself getting over my distaste of the reading. We’ll see!
Update after finishing book: I never grew to like the narration, but, I did get better used to it as I forged ahead. I’m glad I bought Linda Lear’s Beatrix Potter, even though it took me over half of the book to be at peace enough with the narration. Glad I hung in there. This is a really in-depth, interesting piece on Miss Potter.

loved her books as a child
I read most of Ms Potter's books as a child. The drawings were excellent and creative. The narrator of this book throws off the biography with her stuffy English accent. Makes me think that Ms Potter was quite stuck up and snooty. Which doesn't jive at all with the books she wrote.
