During World War II, the 394th Bombardment Group was activated in February 1943 at MacDill Field, Florida, and began training for the European Theater of Operations (ETO). The Group was comprised of the 584th, 585th, 586th, and 587th Bomb Squadrons, and was equipped with the Martin B-26 Marauder medium bomber. On August 23rd, 1943, the 394th Bomb Group arrived at Kellogg Field Army Air Base, Battle Creek, Michigan. The Group had 219 officers, 1,118 enlisted men, and 31 B-26 Marauder aircraft. Less than five months later, one of the aircraft and five men would not make it into battle and would be tragically lost in a training accident near Kellogg Field. The crash was the first fatal crash at Kellogg Field Army Air Base in more than two years since the Army had taken over in 1941. This story recounts the investigation into events that occurred over 80 years ago, detailing where they took place and what remains.
