The postpartum period is a profound time of change for mothers and their babies, shaping the foundation for lifelong health and development. So, this week on Raising Parents: The Parenting Science Insights Podcast, host Dina Sargeant interviews Psychology Professor Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. to learn more about the various ways in which postpartum well-being affects mothers and their babies.
Currently based at the Washington State University’s psychology department, Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. previously worked with a number of clinicians and researchers at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center, focusing on issues related to pediatric chronic illness, and its impact on the lives of affected children and families — an area of research she is still engaged in today. Thereafter, Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. pursued post-doctoral training in Oregon, where she focused primarily on temperament research, as well as childhood and adolescent disorders.
In this episode, Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. sheds light on the emotional and psychological challenges faced by mothers during the postpartum period, and how this may impact an infant’s development. Apart from that, Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. offers insight on how to recognize and address postpartum challenges at an early stage.
Together, Dina and Maria Gartstein, Ph.D. weigh up numerous evidence-based practices and interventions that can help mothers through the postpartum struggles. So, if you or someone you know is navigating the postpartum period, tune in to this episode for science-backed insights on the postpartum journey!
