Acerca de esta escucha
Should we help everybody?Sometimes, helping can hurt.Sometimes, our desire to help can interfere with God’s transformative work.If we help the wrong people, we can lose…For example, no one should help criminals.
We often get overwhelmed by helping people who are only looking out for their own benefit. We become exhausted because some people only want to drain us emotionally, spiritually, and materially. In the end, they may even complain about how bad we are.
The Bible warns against helping seven types of people: the proud/arrogant, the chronically lazy, perpetual mockers, the habitually ungrateful, the divisive, the consistently dishonest, and those who refuse correction. Helping these individuals can block spiritual breakthroughs and hinder their growth.
1. Don’t Help Proud and Arrogant PeopleProverbs tell us that pride goes before destruction, and a haughty (arrogant) spirit before a fall. When these people refuse to seek God’s guidance, our help can enable their destructive behavior.
2. The Chronically Lazy PersonThe Bible gives us this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”These are people who consistently refuse to take responsibility for their lives. While we should show compassion, we should not support those who are perpetually lazy, as our help can become an obstacle to their independence.
3. The Perpetual MockerA mocker is someone who treats things with contempt and provokes quarrels. The Bible says, “Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife.”These are people who consistently mock godly wisdom and refuse to take serious counsel. They might come to you for help, but they scoff at biblical principles and godly advice.Supporting such people would only make them worse.
4. The Habitually Ungrateful PersonWhen someone consistently receives help without acknowledgment, let them go.Wait until they learn to be grateful for the help they receive. We don’t want to make people worse with our help; rather, we want to make them better.
5. The Divisive PersonDivisive people cause division and often live in self-denial.You speak to them, and they try to discourage you or distract you from doing the right thing. For instance, if you love your wife, they might speak badly about her.Divisive people often use manipulation and drama to distract and control others.
6. The Consistently Dishonest PersonWhen you associate with cheaters or liars, guess what they will do to you?You will become their next victim.
7. People Who Refuse CorrectionProverbs says, “Whoever heeds correction gains understanding, but those who disregard discipline despise themselves.”Do not give what is holy to dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn to tear you to pieces. When someone consistently rejects godly correction and continues in destructive patterns, our help can hinder their spiritual growth.Leave them alone!
Final ThoughtsProverbs also says, “Those who don’t listen must feel.”Helping the wrong people can enable their harmful behaviors and prevent them from experiencing the consequences that might lead to change.Be wise in whom you choose to help, and always seek God’s guidance in your actions.
