A dead body is decaying in Ben Jackman’s patch and he’s suspect Number 1.

Proving his innocence in a dystopian hell is problematic because justice is auctioned to the highest bidder and Ben Jackman has no coins to jingle in his pockets.

The story begins with Marvin, Ben’s last best friend, being in deep trouble with the Black Hat cartel. He has stolen and they want the theft punished. Marvin asks Ben to deliver a bag, the stolen booty, to his mother, pleading with Ben to honour a childhood pact, a promise to help each other in times of crisis.

Ben has no recollection of a pact. What he does remember is Marvin stealing his childhood sweetheart and marrying her. That betrayal surely trumps any childhood pact.

Before Ben can agree to this simple request, Marvin is murdered and dumped in a scrap of land next door to Ben's squat.

The Law comes calling, as does the evil Black Hat cartel. They want the bag returned and require a scapegoat for the gruesome murder committed in Ben’s patch.

Ben turns to their childhood sweetheart, Marvin's widow, but that is his first mistake. Losing the bag is his second.

Ben must retrieve the bag, defeat the killers of his old friend, and live happily ever after with the widow. Alas, two out of three is the best he can hope for.
