Acerca de esta escucha

One evening on the week leading up to Christmas Russell Murton all but runs over a figure that lurches suddenly in front of his car. He is astonished when he suddenly realises it is a girl he knew at school, Suki Wainwright, a shy, introverted nobody that no one ever noticed and he has quite forgotten about. He becomes even more surprised when she blurts out that somebody is trying to kill her. Initially he thinks this is just her imagination but when more attempts are made he starts to believe that she is telling the truth. But who would want to hurt, let alone kill somebody is shy, ineffectual and totally harmless as Suki? But somebody does, and that somebody will stop at nothing to ensure that she will die, unless Russell can save her, but to do that he needs to find out who her would-be murderer is. Yet the more he looks, the more confusing everything becomes.

Extract (p.153)

Suddenly, Hermes turned and looked back as if hearing something unexpected, and at that precise moment Jefferson launched himself forward in a desperate attempt to grapple with Hermes. Too late did he realise that sudden movement had merely been a ploy to get him to do just that. Hermes whipped round even as the man moved and the gun fired just once and Jefferson fell forward to remain motionless on the floor. Even as he fell Hermes pivoted on one foot and pointed the weapon directly at Suki, yet with the eyes behind those very dark glasses focussed on Russell, and he knew that if he took one step they would both be killed. Suki stifled a scream and would have collapsed but Russell’s hand steadied her.

“Now, just a few simple explanations and this little charade will be over,” Hermes said, ignoring the still form of Jefferson lying on the floor and behaving as if nothing untoward had happened.

“Simple explanations?” Russell exclaimed angrily. “You’ve just killed someone in cold blood and you think a few ‘simple explanations will suffice?”
