Acerca de esta escucha

Folklory sighed, leaned back. They’d figured out how to read minds, to watch the brain conduct its private operations in micronic (space and time) intervals, to fix a raft of the most insidious problems, but they still couldn’t defeat basic human nature, which gravitated toward self-abuse far more than anyone would have anticipated before UMAA.
Folklory peered at the screen, where the signature was scrolling now:
Kilroy s here
Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here
Folklory leaned forward, peering at the feed from the glowing Cube.
Kilroy was here
ly wa re
Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here
“Kilroy was here.” Over and over again. A hundred times, a thousand times, the words scrolling up the screen almost too fast to be read, varying only where there had been neuronal deterioration. The limited number of errors suggested a recent intervention, definitely within the last year, maybe just a few months ago. But the signature was a joke. Not a real name, no address, no reason for the intervention.
“Who was Kilroy?” Folklory blurted.

Folklory, attention whipsawing between the feeds from the Metascan and the Cube, looked up when he detected movement. Bianca’s foot had twitched beneath her covers. It wasn’t an impossible event during a medicated coma, but the beep from the heart monitor had at least doubled, and her chest was rising and falling as though she were running a marathon while her eyes rolled frantically under their lids.
“Bianca,” Folklory said, desperate to calm the girl before she suffered cardiac address. “Bianca.”
Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here
Folklory cut the feed from the Cube, certain there was no more to be learned there.
“Bianca, I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m done. I’m done here. I didn’t mean to upset you. I’m turning everything off. Okay? I’m done. I’m sorry.”
The door to the room burst open, two nurses hustling to Bianca’s bedside.
