Nick Dean Deals, Cubs Pitching Strikes Out 12, But Offense Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Wisconsin
In a tightly contested matchup at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, despite a strong showing on the mound.
Starter Nick Dean delivered a quality start, allowing just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. The Cubs’ pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts on the night, keeping the Timber Rattlers’ offense in check.
The Cubs struck first in the bottom of the fourth, when Edgar Alvarez crushed his third home run of the season — a solo shot to right-center field.
Wisconsin responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, both off Dean, which proved to be the difference.
South Bend had a late chance to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alvarez led off with a walk, and Rafael Morel entered as a pinch-runner. But Andy Garriola grounded into a double play, and Reginald Preciado struck out to end the game.
Tensions flared in the fourth inning when Cubs bench coach Daniel Wasinger was ejected by home plate umpire Glen Meyerhofer after disputing a batter interference call.
Despite the loss, the Cubs’ pitching staff continues to impress, and Alvarez remains a sparkplug in the lineup.
