"I overheard a rumor about my neighbor's son, Timmy, at a local bar that caused me to become sexually obsessed with him. A young man I recognized from the neighborhood, but didn't really know, sat with three friends in the booth next to the one I sat in with my old friend, Bill. The young man I recognized was in his early twenties, two or three years older than Timmy. Timmy was nineteen going on twenty. I hadn't paid any attention to the loud, rambling discussion the young man and his three boisterous friends were having in the next booth. As I said, I didn't really know the young man at all. He grew up a few blocks away, and for a year or two he and his buddies had a touch football rivalry with the kids who hung around on our block – Timmy's older brothers and their friends. He'd played touch football in the street in front of my house with his team of buddies against Timmy's older brothers and their buddies. That's why I recognized him.
Yes, I wasn't paying the slightest attention to the conversation in the next booth, but that changed when I heard the young man I recognized ask, “Hey, you guys wanna hear what I heard about little Timmy Dykstra?”
“What about him,” one of the other young men asked.
As tends to happen when one hears a familiar name, my interest was peaked. I'd known Timmy since he was in diapers. His family lives two doors down from us. His parents are good friends of ours, and the best neighbors anyone could ask for. When their boys were young, the Dykstras took it upon themselves to organize a block party one summer. It was a huge hit and grew to become an annual event for the whole neighborhood. Other blocks nearby joined in. It deepened our sense of community and was wonderful for the local kids.
When he was in his early teens, my wife and I hired Timmy to mow our lawn, trim the hedges, and do other odd jobs. Our own kids had grown up and moved out and the workload was getting to be a bit much for me to handle on my own. Timmy was a wonderful, sweet-natured kid, and a great worker, but he was so shy and quiet that I never got to know him too well. I always felt that may have been due to his growing up in the shadow of his three rowdy older brothers.
What would I learn about Timmy from this conversation I was eavesdropping on? My friend Bill had excused himself and walked down the hall to the men's room a moment earlier, so I was able to listen without interruption. I listened intently. What I heard shocked and thrilled me.
“Turns out he's gay,” the young man I recognized said.
“Timmy Dykstra?”
“Timmy? Really? That kid had so many girlfriends.”
“So what if he's gay? Big deal?”
“Yeah, no big deal,” the young man who spilled Timmy's secret said. “I'm not dissing him or anything. It's just interesting, that's all.”
“How did you find out,” another of the young men in the booth asked.
“One of my coworkers is gay, and he said he saw Timmy..."
