Acerca de esta escucha
My fingerprints are on each page and my hundreds of bio sketches are only part of my creative contribution to this multi-volume encyclopedia of quotations. Try it. I think you’ll like it.
In listing each quote, I have tried to document the origin of each statement. The reader will quickly see that I have not met that noble quest in the majority of cases. The problem is that many of the quotes I collected were found in hundreds of journals, magazines, newspapers, web sites and church bulletins which themselves did not bother to cite the original source. And I simply did not have the time or resources to go back and track down such information. But as I continue collecting and sharing, I am intensifying that effort to document the source. In many cases, you will find enough information to decide whether to research other writings of that person.
I must confess that, months after writing the above paragraph, I started my first complete review of this manuscript. I quickly decided just a naked quote with a name would miss the important context of why the person’s words are worth your attention. I swallowed hard and decided to include -- for the convenience of you, the reader -- at least a brief, thumbnail bio of the author of each and every quote. Starting on page 1 of the quotes, I spent several weeks adding the details of who, when, and why.
Then, reality set in. It was not like a shining light bulb, but more like a hand slapping me up side of my head. Too often, my “brief” sketches turned into not-so-brief bios. And, even more important, that approach was bogging me down in a quicksand of details . . . and adding an infinite number of pages to this manuscript.
My hope of putting the finishing touches on my manuscript in a couple of months began to look more like an intense, two-year project. That is just way too much work for this one old guy. So, my friends, you will find a mixture of “brief” author sketches and “not-so-brief” bios throughout the books in this series.
I sincerely hope you benefit from the quotes I have compiled and the details of the authors that I have painstakingly gleaned. Oh yes, I know some of you will simply skip right over the biographical sketches. That is certainly your privilege. However, those details often hold little-known facts about the authors and often cite interesting books for further reading. Again, it is your choice.
Finally, I’m hopeful many of you will incorporate some of these slices of wit and wisdom into your daily lives. That would be the icing on my cake. Please, jump right in and enjoy the diversity of thought. In my constant search for quotable material, I became acutely aware that meaningful ideas from women seemed to be highly underrepresented in other collections. So I have made a concerted effort to find and include statements by women. And I intend to make that balance much more apparent in any future editions. – Stan Paregien May 8, 2025
