Male - Female - Straight - Gay - Cis - Trans ~~ How? Why?
How did I become a male or female? Is there a male brain or a female brain?
Why are some people trans? Why are some people gay?
Gender is one of the most vital issues of our day. Unfortunately, widespread misunderstanding and misinformation about the nature of gender hinders productive conversation and intelligent policy.
An excellent starting point for these discussions would be a good understanding of how we got this way. Many essential questions can be clarified by the current scientific understanding of how we develop our sex and gender, including:
- How do our masculine or feminine traits develop?
- What is the role of our genes, our hormones, and our upbringing when it comes to determining our masculine or feminine traits?
- Why are some people straight and some people gay?
- Why are some people cis and some people trans?
This book was written to answer these questions and explain to a broad audience how gendered traits in our bodies, brains and personalities develop. It was written with the belief that it is possible for most of us to understand the processes that lead to our sex, our masculine and feminine traits, our sexual orientation, and even our gender identities. It explores how nature and nurture impact our development, both before and after we are born. It discusses the impact of our genes, our hormones, and our environments on these processes.
This book provides an accessible description of how our traits can masculinize or feminize—especially our personality traits. It addresses the different factors involved, from the role of hormones on our developing brains as fetuses, to the role of parenting and culture. It describes a variety of traits including interests such as auto mechanics or ballet dancing, capacities such as empathy or violence, behaviors such as how we move or throw objects, as well as our self-perceptions and our sexual attractions.
There is currently substantial conflict in our societies about how we should approach sex and gender. The hope is that these discussions will be more fruitful if they are based on up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the basics. Furthermore, the facts about how we develop as humans are both fascinating and awe-inspiring. It is truly valuable to understand how these human traits develop, with an appreciation for our vast human similarities as well as our vast individual differences.
