Even the passive reader can get a sense that there is more to the use of names within Ancient Scripture than we inherently see. The authors of these texts, including the Bible and The Book of Mormon, seems to imply or expect the reader to understand something about how names and titles are used within their works; but often times the distance between the author and the reader, in both time and space, makes it difficult to bridge this understanding.

This text reviews the ancient use and understand of names, especially covenant names and their relationship with the ancient author’s culture and society. Ultimately, this understanding gives the reader a greater sense of depth and appreciation in the ancient authors messages and objectives. This study of names also gives greater insight into the use and context of the name of God within Ancient Scripture; in particularly give clarity to the use of the name of Christ within The Book of Mormon. This understanding can change the framework of Latter-day Saints conception of the message and narrative of that sacred text.

From these foundational principles, additional insight is given regarding, how names within these texts give implicit context within the lives of the characters used, which the author expected and intended the reader to inherently understand but has ultimately been lost to time and cultural understanding. This study will begin to open how names are continued to be used within the faith, tradition, and most sacred spaces of the faithful today.
