Through this powerful and well-documented book, General Augustin Ndindiliyimana, former Chief of Staff of the Rwandan Gendarmerie during the dark years, sheds light on the hidden aspects of the 1994 Rwandan tragedy.
Accused of participating in the 1994 genocide, imprisoned for several years in Arusha, and later fully acquitted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the author presents a compelling and thoroughly substantiated account that exposes the various manipulations and international complicities that distorted the understanding of the Rwandan genocide. He reveals the behind-the-scenes machinations of a war that was instrumentalized, the diplomatic pressures, and the evident collusion. He denounces a so-called international justice system marked by double standards, dysfunctions, reliance on fabricated witnesses, in short, a historical truth sacrificed on the altar of geopolitical interests.
Attorney Christopher Black amply demonstrated the pitfalls, and even the threats, encountered in the battle against darkness to bring the truth to light during General Ndindiliyimana’s trial.
This book is a cry of revolt against oblivion and falsehood. It serves as an open memory, a plea for truth, and a clarification of the realities obscured by the dominant narrative imposed by the victors.
Written without hatred but without compromise, this essential work invites us to rethink Rwanda, international justice, and the relationship between power and memory.
Major General Augustin Ndindiliyimana, born in Butare in 1943, began his journey with studies at the minor and major seminaries before turning to a military career. His training in this field culminated in the attainment of the Staff College Certificate (Brevet d’État-Major - BEM). He served in the military police, then in the paratrooper commando battalion, before taking on academic duties as a professor at the Higher Military School. He later held the position of Chief of Personnel at the Army General Staff. His involvement in public life extended into the political sphere, where he held several ministerial positions: Minister of Youth, Sports and Cooperative Movements; Minister of Transport and Communications; Minister at the Presidency of the Republic; Minister of Defense; and finally, Chief of Staff of the Gendarmerie.
