The Checkered State of the Gospel Church was originally published in 1701 and was "in part preached" by Samuel Willard to his congregation in Boston on September 18th, 1701. He demonstrates that the condition of the church under the gospel dispensation, will always be a mixture of light and darkness, and that this is in accordance with God's sovereign purposes, and that there will be a glorious state to come before the closing of time. Willard encourages the true Christian that all shall be well, even when the times look the darkest; that God is still in control, and he will surely bring his people safely home, and that we have yet to see the best of days. "God has assured us upon his faithful word, that let the day be never so troublesome, it shall still go well with his church—the gates of hell shall never be able to prevail against it." Samuel Willard (1640-1707) was a New England puritan Born in 1640 at Concord, Massachusetts, Samuel Willard was one of the most important preachers among the second generation of New England Puritans. He graduated Harvard College in 1659 and went on to pastor two different churches, the church in Groton and then Boston’s South Church. He played a leading role in the Reforming Synod of 1679 and later became the president of Harvard. “Willard summed up the moral judgments that were meaningful for his time and anticipated the work of Jonathan Edwards.” -Ernest Benson Lowrie
