Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

Historia
What makes love last? Why does one couple stay together forever, while another falls apart? And most importantly, is there a scientific formula for love? Drs. John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. Their goal: to identify the building blocks of love.

For the past 35 years, John Gottman’s research has been internationally recognized for its unprecedented ability to precisely measure interactive processes in couples and to predict the long-term success or failure of relationships. In this groundbreaking book, he presents a new approach to understanding and changing couples: a fundamental social skill called “emotional attunement,” which describes a couple’s ability to fully process and move on from negative emotional events, ultimately creating a stronger relationship.

Statistics show that 50 percent of what determines divorce is genetic temperament. And, if you are one of the 20 percent of people who are born highly sensitive, the risk of an unhappy relationship is especially high. Your finely tuned nervous system, which picks up on subtleties and reflects deeply, would be a romantic asset if both you and your partner understood you better. But without that understanding, your sensitivity is likely to be making your close relationships painful and complicated.

You'll learn the importance of setting healthy boundaries, limiting codependent behaviors, and why taking over roles that make your partner anxious - such as answering the phone, driving, or doing the grocery shopping because your partner feels too anxious to be in public - can be extremely damaging for the both of you.

Did you know you're always missing out on half of the conversation? Scientists have proven that words only make up seven percent of face-to-face communication. The tone of your voice, the speed and rhythm of your speech, and the pauses you make between words account for 38 percent. Fifty-five percent of face-to-face communication is body language. If you're not paying close attention to body language, you're literally ignoring more than half of all the information that's being exchanged between you and the person you're talking to.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

Insightful and invaluable information
While not everything in this book was useful to me, it was amazing how many times it felt like she was speaking directly to me. I learned many useful tips and gained some important insight, most importantly that I’m not alone in these struggles and they’re normal when you have anxiety tendencies. I’ll definitely be referring to this book over and over in the future. The one negative for me though was the vocalist; her voice was much too robotic in my opinion and detracted from the effectiveness of the material.
