Adolf Hitler was a German politician, demagogue, and Pan-German revolutionary, who was the leader of the Nazi Party, chancellor of Germany, and führer of Nazi Germany. As dictator, Hitler initiated World War II in Europe with the invasion of Poland and was central to the Holocaust.

Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting Pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. He frequently denounced international capitalism and communism as being part of a Jewish conspiracy.

Initially presiding over an oligarchic one-party regime that governed by plurality, Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili became the de facto dictator of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin raised funds for Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik faction via robberies, kidnappings, and protection rackets. Repeatedly arrested, he underwent several internal exiles.

To eradicate those regarded as "enemies of the working class", Stalin instituted the "Great Purge" in which over a million were imprisoned and at least 700,000 were executed from 1934 to 1939. In 1939, Stalin's government signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. Germany ended the pact by invading the Soviet Union in 1941. The Soviet Red Army halted the German incursion and captured Berlin in 1945, ending World War II in Europe.

For most of the past century, there have been two schools of thought about Hitler and Stalin. One states that Stalin wasn't really so bad, because he fought the Fascists; the other insists that Hitler wasn't really so bad, because he fought the Communists. Alan Bullock leaves both viewpoints in the dustheap of history, where they belong.

A solid book with some interesting photos during the early years of eastern front combat during World War Two. I have never seen any of these photos before which was refreshing. Most of the photos seemed to be from the Soviet side which I did not mind. If you are interested in the eastern front during World War Two then I recommend this book.

A history teacher recommended this book to me, and initially I wasn't sure a dual biography, particularly one of this length, would work, but Professor Bullock brings it off masterfully as he weaves together the political careers of Hitler and Stalin. Of course it helped in weaving their careers together that: their dictatorships overlapped significantly, they each had ruthless control of parties that aspired to control every aspect of society, they each singled out "enemies" of the state/party for particularly horrific treatment ("racial" enemies for Hitler, class enemies, e.g., Kulaks, for Stalin), they each viewed the other's country as the ideological enemy, and then they engaged each other in the most terrible war (WW II's eastern front) in human history.

The “parallel” is not a writer’s gimmick. You’ll see that it’s essential. If you only had 5 books to listen about the 20th century, this must be one of them. It’s that great.

The book is breathtakingly chilling and hard to put down. Fascinating details about this satanic character. This was exceptionally well done, both in the content and presentation. I learned new aspects of a figure I thought I already I knew well.

This book "Hitler And Stalin" is truly a historical book. It will open your eyes to the character of both persons. If you are interested in the history of this time period this is the book to complete your study. You cannot not truly understand WWII without a knowledge of these persons. Great interest.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. An interesting and a valuable learning tool. All of them were fascinating and I've read book after book on each (I'm a history buff) but the information on Patton was new to me. Especially what he did to those poor refugees from the concentration camps.

The way this narrator narrate it is magnificent, i cannot help but admire this man's will to restore his country to greatness!

This book is for students of Soviet history, Nazi Germany, World War II, and 20th century European history and requires a substantial investment in time as the paperback version has 977 pages of densely-packed prose, but the investment is worth it. Bullock's prose is smooth, and his descriptions at times are haunting, but most important his historical judgement is sober and unerring, or so it would appear to me. Writing in 1991, he had the benefit of decades of previous research to sort out the controversies of WW II, but even at that time the Soviet archives were just being opened so he readily admits that some Stalinist issues and events have not completely been clarified

Research was terrific. Narration was smooth and kept my attention. A lot of new material about the war time transition of the two administrations, and the players close to power. Very interesting information about Stalin' and Hitler. Hitler is a very interesting dude but totally insane. The book is very long and it's odd that in the beginning, as you learn about Hitler as a teen and young adult, he just seems like a passionate, intense, odd dude
