Louisa May Alcott's darker side emerges... of course I enjoyed it! Deceptive, dramatic, and deliciously subversive. Oh Louisa, I thought I knew you!

Exactly what I needed. Pleasant voice and the first part of the story was pleasant. I have no idea how it ends, because I was sleeping.

Historia
1932. After the Great War took both her beloved brother and her fiancé, Violet Speedwell has become a "surplus woman," one of a generation doomed to a life of spinsterhood after the war killed so many young men. Yet Violet cannot reconcile herself to a life spent caring for her grieving, embittered mother. After countless meals of boiled eggs and dry toast, she saves enough to move out of her mother's place and into the town of Winchester, home to one of England's grandest cathedrals.

Soul soothing
Revisado: 09-11-21
There's enough drama online these days that I needed something that would be calming, but interesting.
The unhurried pace lended itself to an easygoing and pleasant absorption in my housework. I was surprised to find my kitchen clean in what seemed like no time at all. Great for those chores that don't require any thought, which is most of them
Although church activity is involved, it's not preachy. Love and inner strength, rather than dogma is woven throughout.
This is my 1st from this author, and I plan on buying another from her.

Historia
Recently orphaned, young Rose Campbell is sent to the "Aunt Hill", where Uncle Alex, her six aunts, and seven boy cousins live in noisy confusion. It is nothing like the quiet girls’ boarding school that has been Rose’s home for the past year. Surrounded by a bewildering array of pets, relatives, and unfamiliar foods, the fragile girl wonders if she will ever get used to this new life. Fortunately, Uncle Alex is her guardian. He keeps the aunts from coddling her too much, and makes sure that she has plenty of time to play outside with her cousins.

When nostalgia disappoints
Revisado: 06-29-21
Louisa May Alcott was a favorite author when I was young. Reading her works was a balm to my soul. I looked forward, in these dark times, to revisiting a "favorite aunt" for some soothing. Sadly, this story was not it. There were some pleasant moments, a fun reminder of times past, but unfortunately, the characters were like caricatures. The aunts were treated harshly by the author and the uncle put on a pedestal, it was so unrealistic that I stopped listening almost half way in. I listened longer than was comfortable, hoping it would get better. I love a story with heart, but this was too saccharin for me.

The wisdom of the Mahavidyas, the 10 wisdom goddesses who represent the interconnected darkness and light within all of us, has been steeped in esoteric and mystical descriptions that made them seem irrelevant to ordinary life. But with this book, written by a respected cardiologist who found herself on a spiritual search for the highest truth, you're invited to explore this ancient knowledge and learn how it can be applied to daily struggles and triumphs-and how it can help you find unreserved self-love and acceptance.

I listened to the sample and liked the reader at first, but after a while I realized she never really seemed to be coming from a genuine place. Her voice became sickly sweet. Kept trying because I loved the book, but eventually gave up and bought the hard copy. It's worth it.

Mitch Peabody was learning pretty fast that the life of a private detective was nothing like the movies. He’d envisioned a world of tough-talking detectives and smart-mouthed, stunning dames. Instead he saw case after case of cheating husbands, suspicious wives and unsuspecting mistresses…until she walked through the door.
