China. Korea. Japan. Southeast Asia. How did Eastern civilization develop? What do we know about the history, politics, governments, art, science, and technology of these countries? And how does the story of Eastern civilization play out in today's world of business, politics, and international exchange?

Fantastic
Revisado: 07-20-23
Enthusiastic professor makes it easy to engage with the material. Well paced, and super informative. History tends to focus so much on the west so it’s wonderful to have such a great course on the East.

Historia
The ancient Greeks, more than any other early culture, have given us the template for Western civilization, as seen in their superlative achievements in the fields of architecture, political theory, philosophy, science, and art - not the least of which are their inventions of democracy and drama. In these 24 compelling lectures, Professor Garland guides you in a richly illuminating exploration of what the ancient Greeks have given us, and why they’re still important to us today.

Not a straightforward history; you can find that anywhere. This is a real look into Ancient Greece. Super informative and the narrator is very engaging and funny. You really feel like you’re sitting in his lecture hall.

Integrated approaches to teaching Greek and Roman history are a rarity in academia. Most scholars are historians of either Greek or Roman history and perform research solely in that specific field, an approach that author and award-winning Professor Robert Garland considers questionable. In these 36 passionate lectures, he provides and impressive and rare opportunity to understand the two dominant cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world in relation to one another-a relationship that has virtually no parallel in world history.

Great author, super informative
Revisado: 07-02-23
Great for people who are already familiar with the history of Greece and Rome generally. It does a great job not just rehashing narrative history but giving different perspectives on events and a deep dive into culture. It’s not a basic recounting of history, so if you want that this isn’t for you. Its good to have some familiarity on the subject. But the author does a good job of clarifying geography and giving examples.

Long sources of mystery, imagination, and inspiration, the myths and history of the ancient Mediterranean have given rise to artistic, religious, cultural, and intellectual traditions that span the centuries. In this unique and comprehensive introduction to the region's three major civilizations, Egypt, Greece, and Rome draws a fascinating picture of the deep links between the cultures across the Mediterranean and explores the ways in which these civilizations continue to be influential to this day.

All in all a good overview of Mediterranean history
Revisado: 06-24-23
The negatives: Very much focused on Greece, Egypt feels sort of glossed over. The narrator made incorrect and strange pronunciations often which was kind of annoying. The author is English and the narrator is American, I also found that strange and made some of the more personal touches to the book a bit weird. The author also does not really specify where certain regions and cities are so it’s necessary to look at maps of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to understand where is actually being mentioned.

Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

Informative but lackluster
Revisado: 11-14-21
Very good content wise and I recommend it on that basis alone, but the narration is not the best. It almost reminded me of an 8 am class in college where even the professor did not want to be there; it just felt very flat and uninspired. If you want to learn more about China's history I would recommend it, but definitely not for the performance.
