Historia
Like the "Dark Continent" of Africa, the dark island of Madagascar holds many chilling secrets. One of them is a long-thought extinct species of dinosaurs living at the country's core. A massive earthquake rocks the mountain range within the Andringitra National Park. The splitting Earth reveals a network of tunnels, hidden away for millennia. Responding to the series of violent upheavals, a pack of hypersensitive predators flee their subterranean home; frenzied and hungry, they head for the surface.

Historia
For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It is a lonely job and a thankless one for the most part. Until something goes wrong. Until a ship is in distress. In the twenty-third century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail. At least, they aren’t supposed to.

War, war never changes.
Revisado: 12-09-24
Turns out it is more of an idealist allegory to PTSD and the struggles of war taking toll on its participants. Towards the end of the book, it slightly brings up memories of Mass Effect 3’s ending. There are some lite Serenity thoughts through the head around the middle as well. Not very overtly grounded sci-fi if you're expecting something more like The Expanse, as it leans more to the monotony and routine of something less taxing than Mark Watney in The Martian.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Not my fave from SGJ
Revisado: 06-17-24
When discussing SGJ’s books, I find that many people struggle with his cadence and character perspective quite a bit. I understood that criticism from the Indian Lake trilogy due to the protagonist being unabashedly a huge Slasher cinephile, but I actually liked and related to that nerding out. Here, stripped of that love of Slasher film, perhaps I actually felt that struggle to stay lined up with the narrative and character at times getting lost in some convoluted ways. This also had a surprising lack of horror from what I was expecting, falling more in line with grief horror and sins of the past.

Historia
The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Very different from the film, but still as classic
Revisado: 06-12-24
Serkis once again knocks it out of the park with his altering accents and personas for each iconic character. First time reading this one, and it’s wild to see the differences PJ took for the film. They mostly make sense, but if them all, I predominantly like Helms Deep getting more time on screen.

It was Vera’s idea to buy the Itza. The “world’s most advanced smart speaker!” didn’t interest Thiago, but Vera thought it would be a bit of fun for them amidst all the strange occurrences happening in the condo. It made things worse. The cold spots and scratching in the walls were weird enough, but peculiar packages started showing up at the house - who ordered industrial lye? Then, there was the eerie music at odd hours, Thiago waking up to Itza projecting light shows in an empty room.

Certainly no Dark Matter
Revisado: 06-05-24
This was recommended to me because I was in search of things to match my Control video game hunger. Reading the synopsis I was hooked, but I quickly came to the realisation that this was just going to be another grief horror tale with a somewhat twisty third act. Not bad, not great, but certainly lacking twists and shock.

An amazing reading of one of the best tales to grace these here lands. Andy Serkis absolutely excels at reading through the entire fellowship, each with terrific impressions of the actors we know and love from the trilogy. A must listen!

Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Just intrigued by Ed Harris on narration. It’s a solid little far too brisk noir from Don Winslow, but not really enough to leave any lasting impression. Why hasn’t Ed been in more pulpy PI stuff?

Came for Rebecca Hall, stayed for the mystery
Revisado: 05-15-24
After watching the German adaptation of his book, Cut Off, I’ve been very intrigued by Sebastian Fitzek. He seems like the perfect fit for fellow fans of David Fincher and the Dragon Tattoo series. And so far, I can wholeheartedly say he is 2/2 in terms of dark mysteries with the tendency to dip into the unpredictable depravity of humanity. I was a little let down by how little Rebecca Hall is in this audiobook, but that isn’t to say she nor the cast did a bad job.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

House of the Dragon, but Samurai
Revisado: 04-12-24
A sweeping, intricately political epic that will be sure to intrigue fellow fans of Game of Thrones. While there is bloodshed, sex, betrayal, and gore, don’t expect it to be an action packed tale. Shogun plays far more methodically, taking its time to showcase cultural differences, Machiavellian machinations, and detailed—albeit not Japanese written—insight.
