Historia
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father's inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty - until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk - grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh - Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered.

Historia
The boy has lived his whole life trapped within a book-choked chamber older than empires and larger than cities. The girl has been plucked from the outskirts of civilization to be trained as a librarian, studying the mysteries of the great library at the heart of her kingdom. They were never supposed to meet. But in the library, they did. Their stories spiral around each other, across worlds and time. This is a tale of truth and lies and hearts, and the blurring of one into another.

Engaging and confusing

I wanted to like this book. There were parts of the story that soared. But much of it was confusing. The narrator was very good and kept me engaged.

Fantastic
Revisado: 06-27-22
This book captivated me. The story, the writing, the characters and the hope that it engendered. I did not want it to end. I want another page, another chapter, another book. Read this and its prequel and its companion pieces, The Lighthouse books.

Historia
Seyonne is a man waiting to die. He has been a slave for 16 years, almost half his life, and has lost everything of meaning to him: his dignity, the people and homeland he loves, and the Warden's power he used to defend an unsuspecting world from the ravages of demons. Seyonne has made peace with his fate. With strict self-discipline he forces himself to exist only in the present moment and to avoid the pain of hope or caring about anyone.

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Liked being trapped in a middle seat
Revisado: 10-03-21
Listening to the main character's endless complaining monologue is like being trapped on the middle seat of airplane listening to an insecure teenage girl complain about her life. I loved Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Spinning Silver. I was disappointed in a Deadly Education, but hoped this book would be better. Not so. More of the same self pittying endless dribble with the story lost in the overwrought stream of consciousness. The narrator actually sounds like the whiney teenager that Novik wrote, so she did a good job. If Naomi Novik is reading this, please write more novels like Spinning Silver or Uprooted. Those were brilliant. This is a disappointment.
