Historia
Fans of Stephen King and Joe Hill that like to listen to audiobooks like The Bird Box and The Haunting and can't get enough stories about serial killers are going to enjoy listening to The Asylum Confessions. The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. I realize they could be playing me and messing with my head. It's a chance I'm willing to take. And now...they might just be playing with yours too.

Unsettling Confessions
Revisado: 04-22-25
"The Asylum Confessions" certainly proved to be a compelling, albeit unsettling, reading experience. While the initial confession, "Patient 1024," offered a relatively subdued introduction to the collection, the subsequent narratives steadily escalated in their disturbing content. "Ken and Barbie," the second story, definitely introduced more unpleasant themes and details, hinting at the darkness that lay ahead.
However, it was the third confession, "Buttons," that truly stood out for its raw and emotionally charged nature. Listening to that particular account was a genuinely rough experience, with certain parts hitting with significant emotional impact. The fourth confession, while different in its specifics, also left a lingering sense of unease and disturbance.
It's worth noting that the book contains explicit language throughout, which aligns with the unfiltered nature of the confessions. Furthermore, given that these are the purported testimonies of serial killers, mass murderers, and individuals with similar violent histories, readers should be aware that the content may contain triggering material related to various traumatic experiences. Ultimately, while potentially difficult to process, "The Asylum Confessions" offers a stark and unflinching glimpse into the minds of those who have committed unspeakable acts.

Reader Beware
Revisado: 03-11-25
This collection contains twelve books, and the initial ones are fairly typical true crime stories – nothing particularly remarkable. However, the writing style shifts noticeably. The later books adopt a more narrative, almost fictional approach, drawing you into the story before unleashing the brutal realities of the crimes. This contrast heightens the emotional impact, making the true nature of the events even more disturbing. The graphic descriptions are unflinching and can be extremely difficult to listen to. As a visual reader, I found the detailed accounts created vivid, unsettling mental images that were hard to shake. If you're considering this collection, be warned: it's not for the faint of heart and is emotionally taxing. Two particularly disturbing stories were "Torture Mom: A Chilling True Story of Confinement, Mutilation and Murder" and "Trust Me: The True Story of Confession Killer Henry Lee Lucas."

Paranormal Confessions: A Huge Disappointment
Revisado: 01-05-25
I was incredibly excited to delve into "Paranormal Confessions," hoping for chilling tales and spine-tingling accounts of the Bellaire House, but unfortunately, this book was a complete letdown. The stories felt repetitive and uninspired, lacking originality and genuine scares. It seemed like the same themes and events were recycled throughout the book. The writing itself was clunky and amateurish, failing to create any sense of atmosphere or suspense. Many of the accounts felt fabricated and lacked any real evidence, making it difficult to take them seriously. Furthermore, the book lacked a clear structure, with stories presented in a haphazard and confusing manner. "Paranormal Confessions" was overhyped and underwhelming, failing to deliver the shocking and terrifying tales promised. Overall, it was a disappointing read that left me feeling cheated and bored. I would not recommend this book to anyone interested in the paranormal or seeking a genuinely frightening read.

Millions died when the Enillo Virus swept the earth. Millions more were lost when the victims of the plague refused to stay dead, instead rising to slaughter and feed on those left alive. For survivors like John Talon and his son Jake, they are faced with a choice: Do they submit to the dead, raising the white flag of surrender? Or do they find the will to fight, to try and hang on to the last shreds of humanity?

Survival, Humanity, and the Undead: A Review of White Flag of the Dead
Revisado: 01-03-25
Joseph Talluto's White Flag of the Dead is a refreshing take on the zombie genre. The story follows John Talon as he navigates a world ravaged by the Enillo Virus, a plague that reanimates the dead into flesh-eating monsters. What sets this book apart is its focus on the psychological and emotional toll of survival, rather than just the visceral action. Talluto crafts a truly gripping and gritty tale, exploring the depths of human resilience and despair in the face of unimaginable horror.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is its cast of realistic and relatable characters. John Talon, in particular, is a standout. He's a flawed but ultimately good man driven by the primal need to protect his infant son in a nightmarish world. His struggles and fears feel authentic, making him a character you can easily root for. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, each with their own motivations and backstories that add depth to the narrative.
Talluto masterfully creates a tense and suspenseful atmosphere that permeates every page. The sense of dread and uncertainty is palpable, keeping you on the edge of your seat as John faces constant threats from both the living and the dead. The author doesn't shy away from depicting the brutality of this world, but he does so without reveling in gratuitous violence.
Beyond the action and suspense, White Flag of the Dead offers a thought-provoking exploration of humanity. The book delves into questions of morality and survival, forcing characters to make difficult choices in a world gone mad. It's a testament to Talluto's skill as a writer that he can weave such profound themes into a genre often associated with pure escapism.
While the story is generally well-paced and engaging, there are a few moments where the narrative drags slightly. Additionally, there are some minor inconsistencies in the plot and character development, but these are minor quibbles that don't significantly detract from the overall experience.
Overall, White Flag of the Dead is a gripping and gritty zombie tale that will appeal to fans of the genre. It's a well-written and thought-provoking story with realistic characters and a tense atmosphere. While it has a few minor flaws, it's still a highly enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse. 4 out of 5 stars.

The Warsaw Sisters: A Story of Resilience
Revisado: 12-26-24
The Warsaw Sisters was a pretty good book, though it starts quite slowly, which is common in historical fiction. However, as the story progresses and you become invested in the sisters and their community, the slow start becomes less noticeable.
The book ends on a happy note, but be warned: it deals with some difficult and potentially upsetting themes.
My only criticism is that I listened to the audiobook, and I didn't particularly enjoy the narrator's performance. However, this didn't affect my rating, as I base my reviews on the book itself, not the narration.

But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. Serial killer Gary Heidnik's name will live on in infamy, and his home, 3520 North Marshall Street in Philadelphia, is a house tainted with the memory of unbelievable horrors. What police found there was an incredible nightmare made real. Four young women had been held captive - some for four months - half-naked and chained. They had been tortured, starved, and repeatedly raped. But more grotesque discoveries lay in the kitchen: human limbs frozen, a torso burned to cinders, an empty pot suspiciously scorched....

not what I expected
Revisado: 11-03-24
This book presented a fascinating topic, but unfortunately, the narrator's delivery fell flat. Additionally, the author's use of outdated language, now considered offensive, created a jarring and uncomfortable reading experience. The tone of the writing often felt condescending, as if the author underestimated the reader's intelligence, which ultimately detracted from my enjoyment.

Historia
Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it". He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

The Pharmacist of Auschwitz is the little-known story of Victor Capesius, a Bayer pharmaceutical salesman from Romania, who, at the age of 35, joined the Nazi SS in 1943 and quickly became the chief pharmacist at the largest death camp, Auschwitz. Based in part on previously classified documents, Patricia Posner exposes Capesius's reign of terror at the camp, his escape from justice, and how a handful of courageous survivors and a single brave prosecutor finally brought him to trial for murder 20 years after the end of the war.
