I loved the characters. Emma, the witty, loose-tongued, hypercritical time traveler and her sidekick, Jacob, everything she is not. And Ike, the AI, well, you have to meet him. He’s where it’s all headed. If you’re looking for a fast, clever read that will take you on a philosophical journey, I highly recommend this book.

Set 200 years into the future, the novel explores what it means to be and remain human and whether a non-biological, silicon substance can acquire self-awareness and give its life meaning. And if so, would it have the same claim to life that humans have.

But just as important is the author’s view of the role biology plays, in particular, the libido, in shaping our history and our prejudices. Prejudices that are near impossible to discard and could very well interfere with the future advancement of humankind.

Philosophy and scientific speculation aside, Michael Segedy’s characters are truly unforgettable and undoubtedly instrumental in bringing this fascinating story to life—especially Emma, rough-tongued, incalcitrant, but full of wit and charm. As she attempts to make sense out of the bizarre world she finds herself in and the odd characters she encounters, her thoughts and comments offer an abundance of humor. And then there’s the suave, erudite Sagan whose professorial tone and love for old expressions and sayings turns him into the caricature of the well-intended but stuffy, pedantic scientist.

And then there’s the plot, which unwinds methodically and then offers a somewhat shocking and enigmatic conclusion that will leave you wondering how close Ike’s revelation about his own reality has a corollary to our own. Funny and at the same time a bit eerie, but a super way to end the story!

Segedy's novel is every bit as much a psychological thriller as a political thriller. We see what creates a certain type of terrorist and murderer and how terrifying or disturbing events in the past bring out our "darker angels."

He leaves it up to FBI agents Rick Clark and Marty Robin to piece together the scarred life of ARC's leader (Anarchists for Real Change) and end the group's terrorist attacks against what appear to be political targets. At the end of the novel, Marty, also a forensic psychologist, finally sees a pattern that links all of the killings.

I believe the cover captures the theme completely. After finishing the novel and looking at the cover again, I get chills. The image on the cover shows the darker angel arising from a world of chaos, the very world the leader of ARC was shaped by. To drive this point home, Segedy's hitmen are similarly affected by their impoverished and hostile environments. The pent up hate and desire for retribution that Billy Perkins has towards "whitely" is not unlike the feelings the leader of ARC has towards the moral monsters who bring pain and suffering into the world. No thoughtful reader could possibly miss the connection, nor the foreshadowing (which begins in the very first chapter) that helps construct the profile of a terrorist leader whose thoughts have become deranged as a result of the harrowing and heartbreaking events of the past.

And speaking of harrowing and heartbreaking events of the past, the way the author details them will leave you in tears. That is if you have any heart at all. And when it comes to details, the way he captures the colors and tones of the childhood world of ARC's leader makes you believe that the author grew up in Palestine.

Definitely if you like complex mysteries and political thrillers that delve deeply into the human psyche and show how the past writes much of the script of one's present life, you'll relish this novel. I know I did. For sure, its characters are unforgettable and their lives are depicted in such a way as to offer an explanation for a large part of the evil we witness in our world.

Loved it! And so will you if you enjoy political thrillers with intricate plots and memorable characters. I was surprised to read a review that the novel was supposed to be about espionage. I don’t know where that idea came from. Also the idea that the author was confused about hitmen and Silk Road. Not only were hitmen contacted through Silk Road but it’s been alleged that the founder of Silk Road even hired one. Also, it is more than clear that EMMA was a leftist group. I don’t see how anyone could miss that. The former black ops officer Brent Cossack was recruited into EMMA because of a personal tragedy he experienced that was connect to a rightwing militia group. Perhaps the plot is a bit too intricate for readers of pulp thrillers and techno claptrap. In any event, I highly recommend this book. It certainly captures the ugly side of covert operations that have little to do with a country’s national interests but much more to do with corporate profits. And it does so in a suspenseful, heart wrenching way.
