Omg so good

I recently learned about Niven from an interview with James Cameron. Can’t wait to get into his novels.

Historia
A life-changing spiritual awakening freed Brian "Head" Welch from a stranglehold of drugs and alcohol and prompted him to leave the highly successful nu-metal band KoRn in 2005. What followed was a decade-long trial by fire, from the perils of fathering a teen lost in depression and self-mutilation to the harsh realities of playing solo and surviving the shattering betrayal of a trusted friend.

Sigh, I love Brian, but this was difficult.

What would have made With My Eyes Wide Open better?
I'm not sure, it was difficult to get through.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Haven't gotten there yet. Frustrated.
Which character – as performed by Brian "Head" Welch – was your favorite?
The good dad figure, when he was actually being responsible.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from With My Eyes Wide Open?
A lot of em.
Any additional comments?
Yes he has emotional issues, but the constant shedding of responsibility was infuriating. "God please get me through this, oh, wow, here's 250 thousand dollars of royalties from korn." How nice. What are the odds that that would happen, given how royalties work in that business.
He made mistakes, spent way too much money, needed money, spent way too much money, then more royalties would come in. Poor decisions, excuses, and more excuses.
Then "God is testing me when things are bad, but he's bathing me in his light when I get tons of money due to business deals in my past." I can't do it. He admits he's made many stupid decisions, but man, it was almost stressful listening to him continuously shed responsibility and blame others for everything or thank god for everything. Yes, he blamed god a few times, but it's unsettling how often god answered his prayers. Good thing he isn't poor and unknown, because prayers are barely ever answered from what I've heard on that other side of the spectrum. If this book gives you comfort, awesome, more power to ya. It left me feeling at a loss to how someone could turn a blind eye to how the world works and how the power of celebrity works and chalk all that up to the supernatural. He seems to be able to twist anything to the power of god and it just gets embarrassing after a while. I just don't get it. And that makes me smile at the end of the day.
