Historia
Dr. Tyson Klein is a quantum physicist who has dedicated his entire life to his research. At CERN, he analyses data generated by the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. Now, Ty believes he's found a pattern in its output. It looks like an organised data stream, being broadcast over what he calls a quantum radio. Could it be a signal from another universe? A message sent from the future? Or something else entirely?

Unbearable exposition

I hated the constant, juvenile, forced science exposition. it was beyond dumbed down. shame, because I love Ray Porter as a narrator.

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Entertaining, if a bit contrived.
Revisado: 05-31-24
Overall, it was very entertaining. The downsides are that the author worked a bit too hard to work in twists, and the last 2 chapters were unnecessary and certainly made the book worse than it could have been.

Historia
1887. London, but not as you know it. The Industrial Revolution went further than anyone could have imagined, and the sprawling, chaotic metropolis of Even Greater London spreads across the entire southern half of England. The immense Tower casts electricity through the sky, powering the mind-boggling mechanisms of the city around it. The engineer-army of Isambard Kingdom Brunel swarms across the capital, building, demolishing, and rebuilding whatever they see fit. And at the heart of all this sits the country's first Private Investigation Agency.

Decent, but least favorite by John Scalzi.
Revisado: 10-14-23
This book had an interesting premise but felt more like a jumble of jokes than a decent plot. There are very funny parts, but is just not as good as the authors other books.
I also usually like Will Wheaton, but here he was acting sparky through the whole thing instead of cynical and befuddled, which would have suited the story more.

Historia
One of our greatest philosophers and scientists of the mind asks where the self comes from - and how our selves can exist in the minds of others. I Am a Strange Loop argues that the key to understanding selves and consciousness is the "strange loop" - a special kind of abstract feedback loop inhabiting our brains. The most central and complex symbol in your brain is the one called "I". The "I" is the nexus in our brain, one of many symbols seeming to have free will and to have gained the paradoxical ability to push particles around, rather than the reverse.

Not scientific, but more of a personal philosophy.
Revisado: 02-09-23
I thought this was a scientific, neurological examination. This book instead is dependent on the authors personal philosophy. Ideas such as "Levels of soulness" are merely an extension of the authors Jr High and High School philosophy that he opens his book with.
It is best summed up by his own passage "I don't think in the least about the brain!" Instead he thinks about thinking.
For me this was a complete waste of time that is fraught with personal opinion and confirmation bias.

When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Mediocre narration for a good story.
Revisado: 05-02-16
In the documentary I Know That Voice, Hank Azaria points out that many of his voices for animation are "bad imitations" of celebrities. Mo from the Simpsons, for example, is a bad impersonation of Al Pacino. For good voice acting a "bad" impersonation is important because a good impersonation would be distracting. This is where the narrator here fails. The character of Al does not just sound kind of like Al Pacino, he sounds so much like him that I want to say "Hoo Ahh" after every sentence. An FBI agent sounds so much like Richard Nixon that you can't help but picture him, despite it making no sense for the character. George W Bush, John Wayne, and several other instantly recognizable voices make appearances, detracting from the overall feel of the book.
The story is great, and 90% of the narration is good, but that 10% really leaves a bad overall impression.

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

5 star story with 4 star narration
Revisado: 03-16-16
The book is a classic, possibly the best young adult novel of this generation, rivaling Alice in Wonderland and The Hobbit. I have read all the books, this one 3 times, and seen every movie, and have rarely felt a tinge of disappointment.
My only qualm with this audio book is that the narrator's voice for Hermione is cringe worthy, playing her as a dim, whining, boring person. If based only on the audio I would have hated the character, dismising her as someone I could not spend 2 minutes with wihout slapping her silly like a scene out of Airplane!

Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Amazing life, fantastic audio book.
Revisado: 03-07-16
While histories in audio can be frustrating because they lack visual references like maps and charts or timelines, this book succeeds in creating a fantastic narrative of one of the most interesting figures in history.
I found this to be a very balanced book, highlighting Napoleons genius while never overlooking his faults and failures.
