Exceptionally well informed and firmly situated in textual and archaeological evidence, this course illuminates how christians and non-christians should understand how Jesus bubbles up from the beliefs and sociopolitics of ancient Judea.

This is well worth your investment of time. Professor Chapman shines a light on Biblical Israel using a diverse set of observations from archaeology, ancient texts, and social/political insights. A unique, engaging and rational voice that should be added to your list.

A terrific contribution from one of my favorite narrators on the early Christianities. Grounded, well-reasoned approach provides the listener with the tools to critically evaluate the significance of Paul of Tarsus. Highly recommended.

This is an exceptional presentation, exceeding the already very high standards set for the Great Courses. Grounded in historical fact-finding principles, the narrator is careful to draw distinctions on where our understanding crosses from fact to probable to speculative. Highly recommended.

This professor briefly makes a distinction between the evidence-based historical Christ and the non evidence-based beliefs of Christ's followers. Then, he promptly conflates the two and presents the New Testament "teachings" of Christ. Other reviews have mentioned the Catholic bias. The Teaching Company has other, very good material about the historical Jesus and his Jewish roots in which the instructors are careful to maintain a boundary between historical facts and cultural beliefs. This instructor is not so careful, so we must throw out his material on Christianity.

Unfortunately, a promising premise is delivered as a belligerent diatribe. Cringe-inducing narration. The window of relevance for this title has already expired, thankfully. There are far more intelligent and better researched titles available on the topic of bias. As most of the commenters here have already mentioned, this title will challenge your listening resolve and you shouldn't be criticized for simply putting it down and moving on to a better title.

Sweeping Unsubstantiated Claims, but Insightful

This title is different from most Great Courses - those that set out a premise, and carefully build to substantiate these premises. Instead, this title aims to superficially compose a sweeping narrative to contextualize Western history and our prospects for the future.

I did enjoy the presenter. He glides through key historical moments and draws out some insights. The grand scope leaves a ton of material to cover, so it can be forgiven that he doesn't dive too much into details, or take much effort to carefully substantiate his beliefs. Some may find the glib treatment as shallow, some may find it humorous. I enjoyed this title more after considering it entertainment, rather than education.

The huge - and I mean huge - negatives are the embarrassing statements about Judaism and the Old Testament. Many of the reviewers have commented on this aspect, and they are spot on. History and the lessons to be learned from history - always and into the future - started with Ancient Israel (and to a lesser extent the Greeks) according to Professor Fears. Not only for Western Christian Man, but for all the world, according to him. Truly cringeworthy for non-zealots. If you can get past the sections about "Yahweh" and "Books of Samuel," this might be worthwhile.

A rambling and unstructured stream of drivel set to a godawful brain-withering soundtrack. I hope this review saves you pain and time.
