A unique science fiction thriller that leaves you guessing and is always unpredictable. The plot is emotionally exhausting at times, and there may be times where you want to stop, but you'll be glad you see it through.

At first, I was concerned that this is yet another zombie work of fiction, but the story is so unique and so well performed all the way to the final five minutes of the book. I think it may have been possible to use another plot device than zombification, but it overall doesn't detract from the story. The author does a good job at leading you down a direction and then surprising you with some truly unique aspects of the story. The vocal performance was excellent.

No spoilers in this review. The writing by Andy weir and narration by Ray Porter are so closely connected, you would think that Ray was the narrator in mind when this book was published for Audible. The character development is superb. the science is amazing, and frankly you really feel for the characters. All told, an amazing book!

I'm a long-time listener of Keith A. Pearson's time-travel audiobooks and have left 5-star reviews for tremendous listens such as "Tuned Out", "The '86 Fix" and the conclusion "Beyond Broadhall". Pearson is at his best with sympathetic and flawed protagonists facing a pre-midlife crisis and unraveling personal and professional lives given a 2nd chance or new perspective by a time travel experience. We care about the supporting characters, details are fascinating and meticulous, and the conclusions are satisfying even when bittersweet.
This unfortunately cannot be said for "Eminence". It features a protagonist in Patrick Finch we don't care about and who’s feeble eccentricities aren't endearing. The second protagonist and anti-hero, Clement, comes across as violent street thug who serves as a "life coach" to Patrick. Their interactions are sometimes odd and Clement's responses to life in 2022 from being transported from 1975 are so muted that you forget about this "fish out of water" context, which turns what wants to be a reverse time-travel story into a weak buddy road trip adventure.
Eminence takes place in the American South focusing on the Atlanta, Georgia area and south Alabama. I live in Atlanta, and Pearson's research regarding the details into neighborhoods and suburbs are not well done. Patrick rents a B&B on Auburn Avenue, in Atlanta's "Sweet Auburn" historic district. Patrick can't find a coffee shop or restaurant in walking distance which is implausible given what 2 minutes on Google Maps will indicate. Pearson inserts the KKK into the story to make the kidnapping antagonist family even more evil that they are. This seems to have been added to justify Clement's severe beating of some of the antagonists as without the KKK connection, the violence wouldn't have been justified. I'd suggest to Pearson that if he's going to set a story outside his native England, that he find some assistant story editors actually from the place where the story is set. This might avoid nearly everyone Patrick speaks with having a drawl right out of Deliverance.
The production of the character voices is also weak. Simple things are both annoying and sloppy which should never had made the final recording. Awkward mispronunciations of Atlanta major roads (Piedmont Avenue) and the town of Macon, GA pronounced in the French-like Maison rather than like Bacon. This is to be blamed on production rather than voice actor Beau Thomas. Saying this, Thomas' American South accents are inconsistent and overly thick and hinder much of the character definition for local people in the story. His delivery is very fast and thus turning your listening speed over 1.00x is not recommended. Thomas' emotions finally appear in the final three chapters and come on so suddenly that it sounds like Thomas himself must have just experienced a traumatizing event before recording.
In the end, we don't care about Patrick, we're unimpressed with Clement, and the payoff announces itself 3/4th of the way through the book leaving us surprised when the narration finally gets out of the flatline from the prior 30+ chapters.

Loved the book in paperback and the audio rendition as well. The narration is a bit old style in that it's not a performance of the individuals featured, but more of a narrative style, which lessens the impact somewhat.

Set in what was then current time of 1970, the story really picks up after the contemporary first third of the book is done. The actual book has photos and sketches not available in the audio book but which is worth a look.

I'm writing this review without spoilers, and it was a disappointment compared to Pearson's past work. We know he loves the 80s, so some 80s pop culture and political references are expected. what feels lazy, however, are the same elements of what happens when someone goes back in time, that is betting on sports to get spending money complaining about technology that is no longer available, complaining about the economy and "Thatcher's Britain". Sean, the protagonist is not an especially sympathetic character. I found it hard to care whether he was successful or not in his other story arcs. his continuing reference to his time travel as "Coma Land", just wasn't very believable. production was also weak, with frequent, very obvious voice-over corrections usually at different volume or tone. The narrator doesn't do the story any favors though as you just don't feel the intensity in scenes. that should be more "in the moment". it feels as if the narrator is retelling the story from 10 years ago, there's just no emotional weight to the intense experiences he's describing. I'm still a Pearson fan, but I'll need to be more careful in the future before I buy any more audio books of his.

I wanted to like the book better than I ended up liking it. The walk through the Apollo program and the science that supported the missions was outstanding. SPOILER ALERT - The author spent a lot of time with character development with Kaz, but he ended up being just a supporting character. Once the action starts moving quickly, there were just too many loose ends and unrealistic scenarios to put all within Chad as the bad guy. Chad ends up coming off as both a sociopath in a misogynistic idiot, and that personality getting through the US space program in the early 1970s would never have happened. There was virtually no backstory on Chad at all, and you're left wondering why the author spent so much time developing Kaz. This being said, I enjoyed the science and overall would recommend the book. Ray Porter is outstanding with his voice acting as usual.
