Historia
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all - beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn.

good BFF story but not as compelling as later novels
Revisado: 05-05-25
I'm a Kristin Hannah fan, but Firefly Lane is more formulaic and not as ambitiously written as her later historical fiction.

not a good as book 1
Revisado: 04-05-25
I enjoyed the first volume in this series, but this one seems repetitive of the narrative in the first. Too much detailed description of scenes and long lists. Well written but a little tedious. The readers were very good.

Historia
In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But Jackson soon uncovers a string of unsolved art thefts that lead him down a dizzying spiral of disguise and deceit to Burton Makepeace, a formerly magnificent estate now partially converted into a hotel hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

But the police have questions, and soon Chris is on trial for murder.

still have questions
Revisado: 02-09-25
I enjoyed the story but am perplexed about a couple of things (spoiler alert): why didn't the lawyer bring up the fact that Chris didn't know about Emily's pregnancy? it seems that would have removed a key pillar of the rationale for her murder. Also why was she so depressed? I kept waiting for the big reveal to explain her motive for suicide. Why did her mother burn her diary, then it never comes up again? Maybe I missed these points in the narrative but they left me hanging.

Historia
The small, rundown village of Great Diddling is full of stories—author Berit Gardner can feel it. The way the villagers avoid outsiders, the furtive stares and whispers in the presence of newcomers… Berit can sense the edge of a story waiting to be unraveled, and she's just the person to do it. In fact, with a book deadline looming over her and no manuscript (not even the idea for a manuscript, truth be told), Berit doesn't just want this story. She needs it. Then, while attending a village tea party, Berit becomes part of the action herself.

good story, terrible narrator
Revisado: 10-18-24
The story's multiple plot lines kept the momentum going but it was difficult to listen because of the narrator. Her style for the women recalled June Cleaver, Olive Oyl, and Rizzo. The main male protagonist sounded like a Hungarian who smoked too much, but I think he was supposed to be from Louisiana? I hope the author and producers will audition more voices for next time.

Historia
Shane Collins, a world-weary CIA spy, is ready to come in from the cold. Stationed in Bahrain off the coast of Saudi Arabia for his final tour, he has little use for his mission—uncovering Iranian support for the insurgency against the monarchy. Then Collins meets Almaisa, a beautiful and enigmatic artist, and his eyes are opened to a side of Bahrain most expats never experience, to questions he never thought to ask.

The story was a typical spy thriller, including plenty of predictable scenes and misogyny. The narration was well done but this author is not to my taste.

I chose the book based on rave reviews but I don't see why it's so popular. The characters are boring, plot is slow and writing pedestrian. I hear enough from self-centered college students already.

Historia
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

implausible, a disappointment
Revisado: 12-30-23
the story is unrealistic from the start. A 20-yr-old college whiz destroys evidence that could help solve her father's disappearance? She doesn't even mention it to the police during their investigation. Couldn't finish it.

Historia
The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common.
