Historia
When British geologists discover the world's largest oil reserves under the desolate, icy tundra of Antarctica, Britain and Chile form a top-secret alliance for control of petroleum resources that will rival the economic power of OPEC. But when their discovery is uncovered by an Argentinean intelligence officer, a surprise-attack against a secret British outpost in Antarctica triggers a war. Britain and Chile are in a military standoff against Venezuela and Argentina, and when the war escalates, Britain asks America for help.

Boring and simplistic
Revisado: 08-27-23
My title says it all. Story is very predictable and simplistic. The religious preaching undertones are annoying and don’t add anything to the story.

If I didn’t have the hours to burn that I did I would not have finished this book. It was like reading a composition of a junior high school student.

Not his best effort
Revisado: 08-01-22
Too much time spent on Carl’s angst regarding his personal relationships. Also a few too many miraculous and unbelievable escapes by one of the characters. I hope future books are better constructed.

Historia
“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

Historia
Everyone knows the story of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, but few are aware of the original conspiracy to kill him four years earlier in 1861, literally on his way to Washington, DC, for his first inauguration. The conspirators were part of a pro-Southern secret society that didn't want an antislavery President in the White House. They planned an elaborate scheme to assassinate the brand new President in Baltimore as Lincoln's inauguration train passed through en route to the Capitol.

Book too long
Revisado: 09-28-20
Overall I enjoyed the plot and story. It was well performed by the reader. However the author always chose the longer way to develop a character or weave the narrative. In places he repeated himself verbatim and it didn’t add to the story. Perhaps he just had poor editors. If these flaws were corrected it would make it a better read.

Book was about 25% too long. Too much unnecessary description that added nothing to the story or the characters. I am glad that over time Baldacci became a better story teller.

Historia
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

Of course most people know the phrase” Dr. Livingstone I presume” but most people don’t know the the fascinating history and issues that framed this phrase. Lee is the perfect narrator for this story and if you want to learn and enjoy a great story listen to this book.

A great tale well written and told
Revisado: 07-07-20
This is the continuing saga of Kingsbridge but also much more. A very well presented albeit long novel about the struggle for the hearts and minds of protestants and catholics in 16th century western Europe. It does a good job of explaining the issues and events that framed them. Echoes of those struggles are still being heard in our times today.
