Historia
The successful 1776 revolt against British rule in North America has been hailed almost universally as a great step forward for humanity. But the Africans then living in the colonies overwhelmingly sided with the British. In this trailblazing book, Gerald Horne shows that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Relaxing & satisfying
Revisado: 08-24-24
I enjoyed its rather “it’s a wonderful life“ feel. It is good to be reminded that even though people may find it laughable or trite, but our actions and choices make a significant difference in the lives of those around us. It was a great story to listen to while I was driving because it really held my attention, and given so much hatred & cruelty around us, it is always beneficial to be reminded about the necessity and importance of basic compassion.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Historia
Black education was a subversive act from its inception. African Americans pursued education through clandestine means, often in defiance of law and custom, even under threat of violence. They developed what Jarvis Givens calls a tradition of "fugitive pedagogy"—a theory and practice of Black education in America. The enslaved learned to read in spite of widespread prohibitions; newly emancipated people braved the dangers of integrating all-White schools and the hardships of building Black schools.

All educators should read!
Revisado: 11-15-23
Givens exposes extraordinary challenges under which Black educators taught from Reconstruction forwards. In addition, it is a reminder of the desire and dreams and goals of Black Americans to achieve their academic goals under horrific circumstances. Thank you for writing this tremendous book that I think everyone should read it.

Historia
Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character — a "difficult" woman. Her story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her, Ruth is only four. The second window into Ruth's life opens when she is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. The novel closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth is a 41-year-old widow and mother — and about to fall in love for the first time.

Such a joy as an adult!
Revisado: 12-06-22
I remember reading the boxed set of the Chronicles of Narnia when I was an early teenager and so enjoyed it. Life has been rather challenging the past several years, and I thought I would throw myself into a pleasanter place during my commute. The readers were awesome and, frankly, I had a lot of fun enjoying these books again.

I lost my own husband almost 9 months ago and I found this book to be the most reflective of my own experience that I ever read. The pain was intense, the confusion and inability to function were true and the insights were spot on. Since my husband and I had lived in Montana for the first three years of our marriage ever so far away from our home in Massachusetts, I greatly appreciated her observation of the intense bond that happens between two people when they live so far away from home and what an impact that makes on the rest of their lives.

Historia
A major American intellectual makes the historical case that the reforms of the 1960s, reforms intended to make the nation more just and humane, instead left many Americans feeling alienated, despised, misled - and ready to put an adventurer in the White House. Christopher Caldwell has spent years studying the liberal uprising of the 1960s and its unforeseen consequences. Even the reforms that Americans love best have come with costs that are staggeringly high - in wealth, freedom, and social stability - and that have been spread unevenly among classes and generations.

Solutions?
Revisado: 04-22-20
By the time I arrived at the end of this book, I was not sure if the author felt that there was a need for a civil rights movement and I was not sure if the author thought that the civil rights movement was good. Affirmative action is problematic, but I would have liked to have seen a comparison for legacy students or Students who play sports getting into a college ahead of others who may have higher academic scores. I would have liked to have seen some solutions suggested because it’s very easy to look at events and analyze them and yet not provide any ideas as to how things could have been done better.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Historia
The presidential election of 1920 was among history's most dramatic. Six once-and-future presidents--Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt--jockeyed for the White House. With voters choosing between Wilson's League of Nations and Harding's front-porch isolationism, the 1920 election shaped modern America.

Very detailed
Revisado: 07-08-11
This book would be awesome if someone needed to do research on voting details of various pre-election and election materials. The information on all the Presidents was great and I found their personal histories fascinating. Just got a bit dry around election types of details, but otherwise a book for a historian.
