Historia
This extraordinary “eye-witness” account of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey's rise and fall from power was written between 1554 and 1558 by his gentleman-usher, George Cavendish, who was privy to so much of the Cardinal's ambitious endeavors. However, Cavendish prudently waited a long time before chronicling his observations for fear of his life, as there were those who may have take his memoirs the wrong way.

INTERESTING INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF HENRY VIII
Revisado: 09-02-24
I first found out about this work from the book SIX WIVES by David Starkey, and after listening to Cavendish's work realized that although it is really interesting to learn about the world of Henry VIII from the POV of someone who was ACTUALLY there, one of Starkey's complaints about it was right...although Cavendish does provide a blow-by-blow of the events, there IS an appalling lack of dates. Setting that one defect aside, the story itself DOES keep the reader/listener interested (although the language style itself may give the reader/listener problems; it IS the English of the fifteenth century after all!) Cavendish is the "fly on the wall", an observer of the events and people that made up the court of Henry VIII and one can forgive him his lack of impartiality (after all he's NOT a proper historian and he was always extremely loyal to his master Cardinal Wolsey). The story is told from the POV of an old man remembering the events of his past, and here the narrator David Thorn does a MARVELOUS job of recreating that persona! This work makes one wish that there were more people from that time who wrote either histories or autobiographies; the closes we today ever get are the fictional autobiographies (THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HENRY VIII and FALL OF THE HOUSE OF QUEENS to name only two) and the biographies that were written hundreds of years later (which sometimes rely on speculation due to documents relating to the events having been either destroyed at the time or still lost or hidden away).
All in all, an interesting way to see the world of HENRY VIII and a fine listen.

Britain's Most Effective/Underrated Secret Agent!
Revisado: 11-18-23
I have read the book, heard the BBC radio adaptation and seen the 1979 movie with David Hemmings...and now I've listened tro the audio book! The only thing I have to complain about here is the audio editing...a lot of times there are no pauses between sections within a chapter to better denote that action is moving to another location or taking place somewhere else; this causes a kind of run-in effect that begins to annoy a listener like me after a while. Other than that, I enjoyed the pacing of the reading and the different voices the narrator has given the characters. This audiobook is a good way to introduce British Intelligence's best secret agent/spy...even if no one else in the current Service will acknowledge him as such!

These stories of murder, mayhem, and mystery are not merely spellbinders but also provide insight into the ways and mores of the complex, fascinating society of seventh-century Ireland as well as heretofore unrevealed background details of Fidelma herself.

Sister Fidelma - an Eognacht princess and sister to the king of Cashel, a religieuse of the Celtic Church and an advocate of the Brehornn court-is one of the most interesting and compelling figures in contemporary mystery fiction. In this collection of short mysteries, Tremayne fills in many of the background details of Fidelma and seventh-century Ireland not found in the novels, and weaves his always-beguiling mix of history and mystery.

Historia
The Founding Fathers have been hailed for centuries as shining examples of men who put aside their own agendas to found a nation. But behind the scenes, there were more petty fights and fraught relationships than signatures on the Declaration of Independence. From the violent brawl between Roger Griswold and Matthew Lyon in the halls of Congress to George Washington's battle against his slave, Harry Washington, these less discussed clashes bring to light the unpredictable and volatile nature of a constantly changing nation.

There's more to History than you think you know!
Revisado: 07-11-22
I remember seeing the print copy of this book for sale at the Visitors Center in Philadelphia opposite Independence Hall, and while I knew about the animosities between Adams/Jefferson and Hamilton/Burr, I was amazed that other Founding Fathers, including Washington himself, engaged in political and personal feuds! Naturally, I eventually bought the printed book, but bought the audiobook first to HEAR the story...AND AM I GLAD I DID! Excellently narrated and kept me riveted the whole time!

Historia
John Dortmunder and his merry band of crooks return to the scene of the crime world in an attempt to steal a fleet of automobiles that would leave the Sultan of Brunei blushing. The mark is Monroe Hall, corrupt CEO of a now defunct conglomerate, who spent more of his company's money on himself than the boys at Enron and WorldCom combined. Having escaped prosecution, Hall is holed up on his Pennsylvania farm, and Dortmunder, as usual, has his eyes on the big prize: Hall's vintage wheels.

Another Dortmunder caper comes to audio, and is once again well-read by William Dufris. His portrayals of Dortmunder, Kelp, Tiny and all the members of the crew, as well as the "civilians" and law enforcement officials, kept me grinning all through the story.
