Historia
It is the summer of 1967. Leo Suther is about to turn 18. This is the summer that everyone has something to teach Leo. His father warns him that "life can turn on a dime." Allie, his girlfriend, wants to teach him about love. Her father, the local communist and civil rights organizer, lectures him on politics and carpentry. And Ryder, a family friend, wants to show Leo the magic of the harmonica, harp of the blues. However, when Leo's life threatens to come unglued, it's his mother's wisdom he turns to. Though she died before Leo was five, her voice lives on in her diaries and poems.

Quiet Slice of Life
Revisado: 09-16-23
This book is filled with characters for whom you care. They quietly populate a Connecticut River mill town where life flows by like the river water. It's always changing, always interesting if you look closely enough. Leo is 17 when he meets up with Allie who opens her heart and body to him. The resulting adventure is alternately exuberant, passionate, evocative, and searing. My sense is that author Dubus wrote this when he was younger, and the manuscript spent many years in the bottom drawer before being resurrected. The story takes place in less that a year, but the engagement lasts forever. A thoughtful and powerful read.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Tried and True
Revisado: 01-24-23
Engrossing from start to finish. Good decision by the author to give the horse story the backdrop of racism in the USA.

Historia
Remarkably little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. So little, in fact, that scientists and philosophers have, for centuries, been obsessed with what has become known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? What are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even in our age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mating or giving birth, and we still don’t understand what drives them, after living for decades in freshwater, to swim great distances back to the ocean at the end of their lives. They remain a mystery.

Remarkable story that finds the intersection of science, art, philosophy, and humanity.
Beautifully crafted. Hurrah

Historia
Here is the dazzling saga of two women: the brilliant, bookish Elena and the fiery, uncontainable Lila. Both are now adults; many of life's great discoveries have been made, its vagaries and losses have been suffered. Through it all, the women's friendship has remained the gravitational center of their lives. Both women once fought to escape the neighborhood in which they grew up - a prison of conformity, violence, and inviolable taboos.

Just terrible
Revisado: 12-13-20
Self indulgence on steroids. First two books were great. Third was ok. Fourth was unbearable.
