I’m not a fan of some of the gruesome stuff that occasionally appears in this series. I really enjoy the reader and the stories but every so often the story lines include crap that is just too graphic and I have to fast forward. In this case the graphic description of a man disemboweling himself is just too much for my tastes.

Can’t they ever keep the same reader?!

Sorry but I really didn’t like this reader. She makes the cast sound like caricatures, too emotive and overly expressive. I liked the lead protagonist Mrs. Rodd before, but in this book she sounds priggish and judgmental. What happened to the previous reader, Anna Bentinck, I think her name was? Sadly, I won’t be going back to this series.

Oh my gosh I loved this book!!!

One of the best books I’ve listened to in a long, long time. I can’t wait for the next one in the series to come out. Richard Osman is a brilliant writer and Lesley Manville is absolute perfection as the reader. I can’t believe how sad I felt when I finished this book.

Tried to make it through

I agree with another reviewer who said this narrator's foreign accents, other than his British variations, are atrocious. OMG! No disrespect but even I could do them better.
I listened to the first book and liked the author's writing, and I was looking forward to this second book. I could make it through with the narrator in the first book because there were minimal foreign accents. But honestly, I just couldn't make it through another book with this narrator.

Love this reader, she's brilliant and the murder storyline is pretty good. However, the sex bits with Cat are an annoying distraction to me. Maybe it's because I don't like her character much. I could use less of the bodice-ripping bs and more focus on the actual story.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I tried. I really, really tried.
But I cannot listen to Robert Bathhurst reading the rest of these Louise Penny books. I just can't. He has ruined this series for me. His Ruth is terrible! His women's voices and children are very, very bad falsettos. He reads in a rushed way, so much so that I actually - for the first time ever - slowed down a book to 9x speed. He's theatrical and posed. There is no realness to these characters now. He's a ham - he overacts these characters in a way that makes it so torturous for me to listen to him.
I try not to be mean about readers, but seriously, I am moving on to other books. This guy has butchered this series for me and I will never listen to another.
Au revoir. I am totally bummed.
