Christine Negroni manages to write a book factually accurate while also writing a fascinating story about aviation. I especially enjoyed learning about the pilot who used all his previous experiences when he brings a passenger jet with many souls safely home.

I love the new character of Rosie Bell.

I love the new character of Rosie Bell. She replaces a member of Vera’s team, Holly, who died the previous year while on a case and under terrible circumstances. One of the underlying themes of this book is Vera’s sense of guilt over Holly’s death and Vera’s promise to change. (Vera tries, but of course does not succeed.)

The other reason Rosie is a good addition to the cast of characters in this series is that it shakes up Vera’s relationship with Joe and his with her. Rosie will not put up with any nonsense from Vera. She hates being kept out of the loop. Anne Cleeves has given herself a good bump to her storyline as I think the relationship between Joe and Rosie may become tense; Joe has already thrown out a comment to Rosie deliberately trying to make her question her relationship with Vera.

I am not crazy about the storyline, but am unable to define why. My love and admiration for the writing, and for the characters has not changed, which is why I gave this book 5 stars. I tend to go back to books three-four years later and maybe on the second reading will appreciate the storyline more.

I am so relieved that I chose to buy this book - after reading the reviews- rather than “Going Infinite” by Michael Lewis.

My least favorite true crime book by Ann Rule.

For the most part, I have enjoyed all of Ann Rule’s true crime books. I did not like this story because I took a particular dislike to the main character, Pat. I had a very difficult time understanding her parents and family who were all in such denial about Pat that they supported Pat yet turned - shunned- the daughter who bravely eventually turned her mother in to the authorities to prevent from harming another person. I actually had to stop listening to the story and even skipped over parts to try to get to an end where this woman was punished. I was just disgusted by the outcome, and never felt this woman was properly punished for her crimes, which were myriad.

This Barnaby mystery did not tie together

I would agree with the reviewer who mentioned that Barnaby and Troy do not come into the story until at least 4 hours into listening time - this was a big disappointment for me to and for that reason alone, it’s my least favorite Barnaby mystery, I also found that many of the plot threads in the mystery did not come together with any satisfactory conclusion and I was left feeling as though Caroline Graham did not know how to end her tale - so she just stopped.

This is one of my favorites! It keeps you guessing. The character who rescues one of the protagonist is not revealed until the very end - so don’t stop listening to the story.

So much about this story made me very sad because it’s about small-town America, and what happens to people when they’re throwaway children. Who knows if this boy was always violent, but the end result is that he killed someone. He certainly needed to be taken off out of society. Could he possibly be rehabilitated? I don’t know - but on another note, I love the way you present these stories. In addition I admire the fact that you really seem to research them. Thank you.

I couldn’t stop listening to this book and being horrified, as well as mystified. I don’t understand how Elizabeth Holmes was able to get as far as she did but certainly a lot of very intelligent people lost their minds. I found the story about George Schultz and his grandson, Tyler, particularly tragic. Imagine choosing to believe a tale woven by a con artist rather than your own family. Hubris. The writing and narration are both stellar.
