Dissappointing fluff.
Revisado: 02-08-25
I enjoyed the beginning of this series, but this book really fell flat for me. It seemed like at least 50% of the content was internal monologues or speeches. Every minute action of plot development was padded in an infuriating amount of ostensibly profound fluff.
It was like:
"As I bent to tie my shoes, I thought of all the times I had ties my shoes before. Tying shoes, I realized, wasn't so much about the laces themselves, as the mind behind the tying. And as I looped those stings I realized that, after everything I had endured, I COULD tie shoes. Knots can be complicated, but sometimes all you needed was a couple of laces and a steady hand." (Parody, in case that wasn't obvious.)
OMFG just tell me what happens!! I get it, you tied your shoes. Then what?!
With the exception of the one major event at the beginning, resolving the cliff-hanger at the end of the last one, this book felt like a dragged out epilogue.

Ever wondered what Bones was thinking and feeling, when he and half-vampire Cat Crawfield first met? Or how their story might differ if he were the one telling it? Now, relive the beginning of Cat and Bones' best-selling love story through Bones' point of view, which reveals a darker, sexier take on their early days, as well as a deeper dive into Bones' past, the vampire world, and other things that Cat didn't see, when their story was told only through her eyes in Halfway to the Grave. Cat had her say. Now, it's Bones' turn.

Ok, but not worth it
Revisado: 02-08-24
This book tells the same story as Halfway to the Grave, but from Bones' perspective instead of Cat's.
It reveals a few trivial things that Cat wasn't aware of and it's cool to hear what went through Bones' head. Overall though the story felt one to one with Halfway to the Grave which I found boring. I like hearing Bones' perspective but it just doesn't contribute enough to the story for my taste.
Maybe it would have been different if what he thought and felt was drastically different from how it seemed. Or maybe if it skimmed through more of the similar parts and covered a broader timeframe. But if I had it to do over again, I'd skip this one.
I'm more interested in the next one which covers the years that Bones and Cat were apart. But after this one I'm a bit burned out on the series. So yeah, I wish I'd skipped it.

Okay, but super annoying FMC
Revisado: 07-27-23
As another reviewer said, this book was just ok. I actually liked most of the characters--except Lacey. I swear she doesn't do a single thing in this series of her own volition except whine and sulk in denial. Denial of her own feelings, denial of truths she would rather not face, denial of choices (that aren't even hers to make) that she doesn't like.
The only thing she ever really contributes is her fancy light magic, but it really just does its own thing whenever it's needed. It's not like she developed any kind of skill or insight to wield it.
If so much of the series hadn't dragged on through her pathetic internal monologuing though, it would have been pretty good. Unique story for this genre, well developed characters, action, decent (though not that hot, IMO) sexytimes, only moderately unhealthy romance.
I probably won't read anything else from this author though. I liked the Reaper series better than this one, and the Paranormal Prison series best of the three. But there was enough that grated on me in all three that I'm probably done.

My story? It’s wrought with violence. Strewn with blood. Dominated by desire. My stepmother, the evil queen, hates me. She wants me dead but hasn’t killed me yet. At her insistence, a never-ending line of repugnant suitors vie for my hand, but when I decline each and every one, the evil queen punishes me...severely. She will stop at nothing until I’m sold or dead.

Erotic horror allegory, poorly executed.
Revisado: 06-12-23
I love me some dark erotica. I can enjoy a hefty dose of violence and even non-consent themes when done well. Take Rage by K. A. Knight or The Death Club by Caroline Peckham--both of them are explicit in equal parts violence and lasciviousness. So, based on the description, gorgeous cover, and reviews, this book seemed right up my alley.
But there was not a single part of this book I enjoyed. The unmitigated torture, which takes up at least the first third of the book, is revolting and seemingly pointless. The sex scenes, while long, frequent, and explicit, are almost always awkward and lack any real heat.
Then there's the plot...
Like a series of random dice rolls, it is invariably mystifying why a character ever does anything. This is _especially_ true of Snow. While I'm able to overlook the kind of air-headed behavior prevalent in varied romance genres, this is on a whole other level. One minute she's the strategic rightful queen hardened by years of torture--the next she's a whining and impulsive child. The evil queen's rather extreme behavior goes unexplained (though maybe it is after I stopped reading). The Seven's actions don't match up consistently with their respective sins. Even the townspeople! That scene where they all rally behind Snow then, for no reason, just wander off and go home? No sense, whatsoever.
I made it to to 11 of 16 hours. Then I came to the conclusion that Seven Sins of Snow is like a smutty Pilgrim's Progress. The characters don't have to have perceivable motivations or substantive depth because they're just personifications of whatever moral lesson was being conveyed. The plot doesn't have to make sense because it's not so much a story as the scaffolding upon which to string together a series of allegories.
That's my theory anyway, and my most generous interpretation of the truly abysmal writing.
By that time I couldn't care less about whatever deeper meaning the author may have been trying to impart. The book is full of annoying characters who I don't care about doing stupid, baffling, and usually repugnant things that I don't want to read about. Maybe it all turns around in the last 5 hours? Otherwise I'm utterly mystified by all the five star reviews.

Naughty girls need love too. A beautiful monster, that’s what I am. My packaging is just a little nicer than the creatures you hear about dwelling in your closet. With three baddies for my mates, things are definitely getting interesting. I think I’ve even convinced them not to kill each other. But I have a new purpose, someone is hurting our kind. Stealing Charmed magic in arcane rituals that leave my friends drained and dead, and I won’t allow it. It’s time for them to find out why even the Monsters fear me. I am the bad guy.

My name is Danica James. I'm a cop with the Arcane Division. Most mages have the ability to manipulate the elements - fire, water, air, earth, electricity. My magic only works on machines and electrical devices. They call me a magitek. That doesn't help much with demons and vampires, let alone criminals with lethal magikal powers.

Good pg-13 fun
Revisado: 05-06-22
This is a fun book--likable characters, action packed, mystery, intrigue, demons and weapons oh my!
Contrary to the comments of another reviewer I have to say this book had no graphic sex scenes. There are exactly two scenes of a sexual nature, both of which involve magic, almost no actual touching, and almost all clothing remains on. There is reference to the existence of BDSM, which I guess some might consider "deviant". But even so, it was just a background topic, no 50 shades. This book is really quite tame.
That being said, one of the main story arcs involves investigating human trafficking rings and there is plenty of graphic violence (though no more than you'd find in any detective TV show--plenty of equally gruesome murder scenes in say, Castle.) So yeah, mature audiences for sure, but this is no bodice ripper.

Absurd, but fun
Revisado: 02-16-21
This book is a rather heavy handed parable on the superiority of thinking before you act and managing your emotions over charging in and pretending no fear in service of tough guy bravado. It wasn't enough that every major plot point was framed with the main character triumphing over angry bumbling fools because she took two seconds to think and clam her mind, but then every person she interacted with found it necessary to summarize the moral lesson for you by way of saying how wrong they were to underestimate her and her approach and how darned great she is.
(As a side note, I think the debates from other reviewers on sexism is a case of Poe's Law. Yes, there's plenty of over the top misogyny. But it's mostly there to demonstrate just vile the various straw characters are. It would be like an author using the kick-the-dog trope literally, then for reviewers to get enmeshed in a debate on animal abuse.)
Even so, it was an action packed adventure that I found myself engrossed by despite myself. The characters were distinctive and likable, the fight scenes vivid, and the tone oddly lighthearted in spite of the seemingly grim context. Between the absurd proselytizing and the military theme which isn't my usual thing I kept thinking I'd stop reading it any minute. Instead I got so caught up in the ride that I was done before I knew it.

steamy scenes aside, cringe worthy
Revisado: 10-29-16
Any additional comments?
The sex scenes were hot, but the rest of the story was cringe worthy.
It was an interesting trick--the allegedly male point of view. But it was so over the top as what a female thinks a guy thinks like. The cocky womanizer bits were irritating. The part where he turns a new leaf still cocky but also syrupy sweet.
I guess this represents what some ladies want or find attractive, but I found it pretty gross.
