Dan Kennedy Is A Trump Bootlicker
Revisado: 06-14-24
Dan Kennedy’s admiration for Trump, the twice-impeached convicted felon and insurrectionist, is nauseating. And, of course, he downplays President Obama’s economic recovery from the 2008-09 recession, that started long before Obama’s presidency. Kennedy should stick to the theme of the book, rather than kissing Trump’s ass.

Lonely? Read this book!
Revisado: 11-21-23
This is an excellent book on how to meet people, socialize with them, and to expand your friend group. As a lifelong introvert who has worked hard at becoming more social, the concepts in this book can help you “come out of your shell”. I highly recommend it!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

What An Amazing Novel!
Revisado: 01-09-23
It is easy to see why the debut novel from Bonnie Garmus is already a bestseller: a great story, a great narration, and a very insightful interview of the author in the Audible version. As the father of two daughters, I enjoy stories that involve strong, smart, and independent women, and Lessons in Chemistry did not fail. This lifelong reader gives this book five big stars!

One of My Favorite Books
Revisado: 12-20-22
I’ve read or listened to The Corps series twice and am starting round three of the series. While these books are “novels”, they have enough research and historical accuracy to be labeled - in my opinion - as “historical fiction”. As someone who served in the Marines, I enjoy the story, the characters, and the narration of the Audible version. Semper Fi!

Well-Written Book Re: Horrible Person
Revisado: 10-13-22
Maggie Haberman, who may have known Trump as well as any writer and was able in interview Trump at least three times, did a great job of writing this biography about the most embarrassing president in American history (I don’t make this comment lightly - I’ve served as a U.S. Marine, a church elder, and as a prosecuting attorney).
America knew he was pandering to evangelicals when he said his favorite book of the Bible was “Two Corinthians”. Trump promised to “drain the swamp”, but instead, filled the swamp with people like Manafort, Stone, Flynn, Boebert, Gaetz, MTG, and Jordan. We can’t forget that nearly one million Americans died of COVID on Trump’s watch. And finally, his so-called “patriots” attempted to overthrow the U.S. Capitol and our democracy. Maggie Haberman covers all these events - and more - in her well-written book.

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe; France has fallen; Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East.

Great Story!
Revisado: 08-11-22
Having just listened to Steven Pressfield’s “The Lion’s Gate”, I was wanting to listen to another of his books. “Killing Rommel” did not disappoint. It’s a great account of the North Africa campaign, the SAS & the LRDG, and Rommel. I highly recommend it!
And for those readers who do not like historical fiction, this book is much more “historical” than “fiction”. Though Pressfield’s research is - as usual - top-notch, he wasn’t in North Africa, and many of the primary sources & characters have passed away, so the book therefore has to be called “historical fiction” rather than “non-fiction”. Don’t let that stop you from reading this book; it’s excellent!

Historia
When Brendan Leonard moved to the West at age 23, he was a mess. He had a tenuous grip on sobriety, only six months after his last drink had landed him in yet another jail cell. It was the final mistake in a long list that included multiple arrests, wrecked cars, broken bones, fistfights, and ruined relationships. In Montana, he took his first steps into the Rocky Mountains, unwittingly beginning a decade-long obsession with climbing and a journey that would take him all over the West and Europe.

Revisado: 08-06-22
I’ve been a huge fan of Brendan’s books, podcasts, artwork, and blog since watching his video “How to Run 100 Miles” (it’s on YouTube). As usual, Brendan combines inspiration and self-effacing humor to share about his life, mistakes, and the lessons he has learned. He’s an amazing writer.

Historia
There are few moments in American history in which the course of events tipped so suddenly and so dramatically as at the Battle of Midway. At dawn of June 4, 1942, a rampaging Japanese navy ruled the Pacific. By sunset, their vaunted carrier force (the Kido Butai) had been sunk and their grip on the Pacific had been loosened forever. In this absolutely riveting account of a key moment in the history of World War II, one of America's leading naval historians, Craig L. Symonds, paints an unforgettable portrait of ingenuity, courage, and sacrifice.

I’ve been fascinated by the Battle of Midway since 4th Grade, and I’m now 57-years old. This was an excellent book that was well-researched and well-narrated. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about this decisive battle.

Rising from the depths of the North Pacific lies a fabled island, now submerged just 15 feet below the surface of the ocean. Rumors and warnings about Cortes Bank abound, but among big wave surfers, this legendary rock is famous for one simple (and massive) reason: this is the home of the biggest rideable wave on the face of the earth.

If you liked Christopher McDougall’s “Born to Run” or James Nestor’s “Deep”, you’ll enjoy Chris Dixon’s “Ghost Wave”. I’d recommend all three books, even if you’re not an ultrarunner, freediver, or big-wave surfer. I love how all three books tell stories within the stories, about people, places, and history.
