That should have been the title. I manged to get through the first book and the first half of the 2nd before I just gave up. The characters and dialogue are boring, self centered, and in conflict with reality... even a medieval reality. The character Rew is a disservice to the Ranger genre and the plot devices constantly employed to make this idiotic tale into something cohesive grew tiresome in the first book and even moreso in the 2nd. No more thank you...

Like so many others, I was first introduced to fantasy by Tolkien. Indeed, the first book I ever read was The Hobbit. The writing style and phrase of speech in this book is so akin to Tolkien that it instantly felt like going back in time. It's not the story itself or even a comparison to the world Tolkien created, it is the ability to tell the story in a way that leaves the reader's imagination free to paint the scene...that is what this writer has in common with Tolkien and why it is so appealing. I've yet to find another author with that same capacity...until now. Add in the narration by Robert Inglis and you have an instance classic...no matter how long it takes you to find it!

Within the first couple of chapters you realize this is the kind of book you'd get if a fantasy-fiction fan with no writing experience listened to "The Land" series by Aleron Kong and then decided "I want to write a LitRPG book too!" The author even named one of the characters "Aleron", but it doesn't feel like he paying hommage..it feels more like an apology. Not just "The Land", but nearly everything you hear and see feels borrowed from other books and inserted like a "Paint by Numbers". Like a first attempt at creativity by an AI that had "The Land" as it's primary reference with additional standard fantasy works thrown in as filler. Even the dialogue and character interactions feel like repeats... Time and again I found myself thinking "that's taken almost literally from (insert book title here)". The LitRPG mechanics are used lazily and as a prop instead of as a means of enrichening the story. I can appreciate how hard it must be to write something original in this space, but all the effort in this title went into patching together the borrowed ideas and references from other (good) works.

Fans everywhere love this series (including me) and for good reason, but this installment felt like the ramblings of an author who either 1) has no idea where the main story is heading, or 2) got some bad advice from his publisher. The LitRPG story mechanics were continuously hashed and rehashed, over and over to the point that it grew beyond tedious. Admittedly, this is one of the things that makes this type a book good, but there's a very fine line between detail and "getting the "F" on with the story..." The title should have been "Five days in a cave with a single character and a neverending series of prompts to read..." The first thing I noticed was a 16-hour book whereby the last was 42 hours. I then kept watching the chapters tick by and thinking to myself "...the story is never going to get out of this bloody cave! The Mist Village isn't even in this book! No Scion; No Randy; No one but Ricter, his pet rock monster, and a few new beasts to kill in painstaking detail..." I guess the author felt his fans owed him one. I only hope the next installment (whenever that may be) will be worth the wait. Save your credit and read the plot summary online...you can pick up with he next book having missed hardly anything.

Since when do these books end in "... to be continued?" Feels like a cash grab just to string you along and spend your money to get the rest of the story. The story is good, but much of the first book felt like filler going over well known into for anyone who's read the previous books. Also, it cuts off right at the point when it starts to get interesting and anything worthwhile is happening . Shane on you John for taking the route of "swindler"!

Not what you'd expect from Dan Brown. It must be hard to channel brilliance each time, but I've read much better books that were written in a fraction of the time. I expected more after waiting so long. Not disillusioned, just disappointed...

Not what we've come to expect from a Salandar book. Only 10 hours long and was kinda boring most of the time. Should have taken the opportunity to start another trilogy. Salandar is not a one book character that saves the day by the last page, she's more complex than that and deserves better... I appreciate the effort and opportunity to listen to more Salandar, but you're gonna have to dig deep to do Steig justice next time. This felt like a cash grab... the last one was better.

Wether you like this genre or not, the writing is first rate. If you like sci fi and grew up in the 80s it's a real treat.
