Two of the great themes of the Civil War are how Lincoln found his war-winning general in Ulysses Grant and how Grant finally defeated Lee. Grant's Victory intertwines these two threads in a grand narrative that shows how Grant made the difference in the war.

Excellent Description of the War'sEastern Theater
Revisado: 09-12-23
Excellent description of the Federal general's and the war and battles in the Eastern Theater of the U.S. Civil War. I highly recommend it for the detail and insight into the generals and the battles in such a brief book. It does a decent job describing the Confederate generals in that theater as well. However, the book is misnamed. Although it DOES give the reasons for Grant's success, the book is primarily about all the main generals that led the Army of the Potomac, its battles, and how they succeeded and how they failed. This then leads to why U.S. Grant was different, which was a relatively small percentage of the book. I found the book well worth my time, but it is not a book ON Grant, per se.

An Investigation
Revisado: 09-09-23
A very interesting investigation trying to figure out what connects a series of murders in a small town. Since the main character is an Army investigator. it must be something serious.
Note: Those reviewers who complained that the lead character was too much like John Wick, and therefore the book was no good, are way off base. At most, one-tenth of one percent of the book resembles the John Wick saga.

Part of a Saga
Revisado: 02-19-23
Very well written and well read. The only downside is that it is written as a small part of a long saga, and the main plot for this book, while having a beginning, middle and end, was a little thin standing on its own. However, there was plenty of well presented material which now awaits further development in the continuation of the saga.

Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

The warning was inscribed on the entrance of the hidden tomb, forgotten for millennia in the sands of mystic Egypt. Then the archaeologists and grave robbers came in search of the fabled Jewel of Seven Stars, which they found clutched in the hand of the mummy. Few heeded the ancient warning, until all who came in contact with the Jewel began to die in a mysterious and violent way, with the marks of a strangler around their neck.

Excellent, then pointless
Revisado: 06-21-22
This book, while in the style of the time, was very engaging as it built towards a dramatic ending that never came, making it feel like my listening time was stolen! I believe that I read in other reviews that there were several alternative endings written. Maybe one of them would have made the listening time worth it. Or maybe audible should have performed each of the already written endings for comparison. I would have given the book 5 stars if in the end it had a point (Note: There was a weak attempt at one in the last few minutes if the book).

The complete collection of acclaimed BBC Radio dramas based on John le Carré's best-selling novels, starring Simon Russell Beale as George Smiley. With a star cast including Kenneth Cranham, Eleanor Bron, Brian Cox, Ian MacDiarmid, Anna Chancellor, Hugh Bonneville and Lindsay Duncan, these enthralling dramatisations perfectly capture the atmosphere of le Carré's taut, thrilling spy novels.

Interesting but repetitive
Revisado: 05-21-22
I realize that some people love John Le Carré. However, my feeling after reading four of his books and listening to all these dramatizations is that he has really only written two (2) books:
1. One on the methods and effects of a very high-ranking counterintelligence officer inside British Intelligence, and the severe damage he caused (based, unfortunately, on a true story); and
2. Multiple novels about synical espionage actions for ends of dubious value (again, based on real experience).
While I appreciate both of the above concerns, 2 books would have covered both subjects sufficiently well. After that it just becomes extremely repetitive.
If you have read any of the novels, you will find that the BBC dramatizations here do quite a decent job of reflecting the novels, and do quite well adapting to the medium of radio.

Interesting
Revisado: 12-26-21
Very interesting ideas, tone, and style. The plot narrative was sufficient to carry a good short story, but perhaps not a full novel. Overall, I enjoyed listening to the ideas that PK Dick was playing with in this book.

The first of these novels, A Princess of Mars, was Burroughs' first book, and he wrote the next two novels in quick succession. Together they tell the story of John Carter of Mars - how he came to Mars, met the love of his life, and quickly found himself occupied full-time defending her and saving his adopted planet from interplanetary evildoers.

Much more modern than expected
Revisado: 09-19-21
The first book was very entertaining. The second book was near brilliant, chock full of ideas and machines that I would have expected from Star Trek or Phillip K. Dick, not from one hundred years ago. The third book was disappointing--Our hero seemed particularly and continuously dense all of a sudden, but gets through to the end due to continuous coincidences and his fighting skill.
The commentary was interesting, and was in chapters between the books. You can easily skip these by going to the next chapter (that is, next book) if you are not interested in listening to it.
I intend to read the first and second books again in the future. I will skip the third (although you will want to read the third book in order to finish the story). :-)
Note: I found the narration quite satisfactory. The narrator's voice seemed appropriate to the nature of the book and the characters. Seeing so many versions of The Princess of Mars on audible, I am sure that there may be a more dramatic reading among them. ;-)
