I had to give up listening. I found the word "like" used so often that I couldn't concentrate on the story.

Historia
On an otherwise ordinary morning in 1943, Helene Hannemann is preparing her five children for the day when the German police arrive at her home. Helene's worst fears come true when the police, under strict orders from the SS, demand that her children and husband, all of Romani heritage, be taken into custody. Though Helene is German and safe from the forces invading her home, she refuses to leave her family - sealing her fate in a way she never could have imagined.

interesting history

The book was well written and interesting from the beginning. The narration left me feeling as if it was being read to a child and lacked compassion. I would have enjoyed it more if read by someone with a German accent to authenticate who the story was written about.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Loved it. Well narrated. Looking forward to more stories by this author. Great storyline with a glimpse into some horrific times in history.
