Johnstone is getting lazy.
Revisado: 01-03-25
Lawmen are not idiots. Yet
In the first Duff McAllister story, the sheriff approaches a band of known murderous outlaws without a shotgun or even drawing his gun. In this story, the posse holster their guns when arriving upon the location of the outlaw’s horse which they’ve just shot. Young man become excited and aggressive when achieving partial success in dangerous situations. They do not holster their guns and passively prepare to go home! There are many real life ways in which real law in the west died. Morgan Earp and Wild Bill Hickok or two notable examples. Johnstone should use similar life examples. Depending on the stupidity of lawmen is a poor crutch. It’s frustrating. It makes his otherwise excellent character development of lesser value. It’s like good chocolate icing on a burnt cake.

Don’t don’t waste your credit!
Revisado: 12-19-24
The author seems to obtain his understanding of Chinese philosophy and Buddhism from conversations over drinks with those who read Cliff notes for 2-day survey course. Nor are People inspired to follow whiners. Nor does an Encyclopedia level understanding of technology enable one to reproduce it.
SPOILER ALERT:
Finally, the author has the hero unable to win a battle in which he has both the divine tree and the willing support of 2 beasts vs a guy whose 2 beasts resist him. The hero is upset over the guy whose actions caused devastation and great suffering. Yet then the hero starts a fight which would have killled everyone in the area if not sucked the life from everyone and everything connected to him. Just YUCK!

Monologues and letting the villain escape.
Revisado: 12-05-24
What is it with the trend of authors having heroes manufacture theirs own crisis? Instead of ending the life of a sadistic kidnapper and torturer the heroes them escape. Life is not like Saturday morning cartoons where the same villains come back week after week.
It’s bad enough having to suffer through repetitive accounting of the heroes class, stats, and the same messages but to then not deal with clearly demonstrated threats, on top of narration that fails to capture the drama of battles makes this book almost to painful to listen to.

Duh!!!
Revisado: 11-23-24
Stupid authors that have their heroes fail to do what anyone else would, I.e. that which is necessary and right for the protection of others and bring justice for victims. Why? Obviously to add drama by making a bad situation harder for the good guys. Augh!
It’s a lazy cop out. But it seems to a common motif.

Depressing
Revisado: 11-21-24
MC does almost none planning before going back in time. While not buy some golden eagles (19th century coins.). He doesn’t bring a rifle even those he has experienced their necessity for survival. He doesn’t learn medical skills and nursing that can be applied in a primitive setting. He is impatient, naive, and ignorant. Anyone who has read about the experiences on the frontier will know that life was especially challenging for our country’s indigenous tribes. This turns a story of courageous hope and ingenuity into a tragedy.

Historia
They say family always sticks together, but when you're your dad's only lifeline and the whole world - humans, dragons, and gods - wants you dead, "family bonding" takes on a whole new meaning. My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I'm in way over my head. I thought getting rid of my dad's bad luck curse would put things back to normal. Instead, I'm stuck playing caretaker to the Great Dragon of Korea. That wouldn’t be so bad if he wasn't such a jerk, or if every dragon on the planet wasn't out to kill him, or if he was my only problem.

Traitors and oversimplification
Revisado: 10-18-24
Society used to know that life wasn’t more important than out of the community. Now we have multitudinous TV shows, movies, and now this stupid novel in which the hero puts everyone at risk in order to not jeopardize the one. This is just the bad icing on a bad cake. The DFZ Spirit is so over literal that she makes illogical and inconsistent arguments in order to both support and not take direct action against her enemy.

Dying the first time sucked. Matt's trying to avoid a repeat performance. Having to save the world after being reincarnated is rather enjoyable. In a soul-crushing responsibility kind of way. For Matt, joining Earth's last line of defense in a magical realm might just be what he was re-born for.

Not worth 1 credit
Revisado: 06-29-24
I love Tau Wong’s “A Thousand Li” series. Here he paints by the numbers. The things that made the other series great—friendships, challenges, well developed character interactions, or even plot development and world creation are absent. Almost Worth $4.95 sale price.

Historia
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

I hate when authors have smart people behave stupidly for the sake of the plot. Cal fails to act to kill the cat when it was helples and would have given him control of a powerful new boss.

Historia
"Has your life here been so difficult? You seem to fail upward at every opportunity." So says Careena, the hag teaching Clyde Hatchett how to use magic. It certainly doesn't feel like that to Clyde, who's still got a day job scraping mud (at least he hopes it's mud) out of monster pits. And yet, Clyde's found himself at the center of a massive conspiracy to kill the Emperor. He's the only one with proof that could save the man, and take down an entire network of corrupt nobles, evil slavers, and power-hungry despots.

Historia
Straight out of the West (or, you know, somewhere through a gloom portal), in a thunder of hooves (but they're kinda like giant turtle hooves, if you can picture it?), comes Montana Coggeshall, gun (sword) slinger. Sure, he's survived Fiends' Night and an all-out goblin war. But for his people in Coggeshall to truly be safe, Montana needs to go out and find the source of all these crazy attacks.

Revisado: 01-27-24
WWF, WWE, ATF… I’LL LET YOU FIGURE OUT THE ACRONYM AND EXPLETIVE I REALLY WANT TO USE. IS OUR HERO BECOMING A MONSTER? MONTANA SETS THE TOWN ON FIRE. Slavery is an abomination! It seems Montana set the town on fire not because he hates slavery but because he’s getting too tired to do the right thing. How many of elderly or children died, because they could not escape. This book seems like a mediocre 70s movie where you expected to accept a questionable plot because of good-looking people, good lighting, and marginal acting in storyline require it. I did not realize that I had read the book before until Montana climbs the tower, and kills the Jinn.
