Great fundamental
Revisado: 02-18-24
So this is supposed to be kind of erotic, and there’s really not much sexual tension until very deep in. Other than that it’s pretty solid as a survival story.

Historia
Peking in 1937 is a heady mix of privilege and scandal, opulence and opium dens, rumors and superstition. The Japanese are encircling the city, and the discovery of Pamela Werner's body sends a shiver through already nervous Peking. Is it the work of a madman? One of the ruthless Japanese soldiers now surrounding the city? With the suspect list growing and clues sparse, two detectives - one British and one Chinese - race against the clock to solve the crime before the Japanese invade and Peking as they know it is gone forever.

If you like things to be drawn out you’ll like it

So I got this because I like Chinese history, and I needed to branch out into some other kinds of books. The beginning where he describes who Pamela and her father were was absolutely necessary, but honestly this book is a bit too long. Compelling but unnecessarily long. The later chapters are so good, but it’s tedium to get there.

Historia
Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.

Humanizing the average German soldier
Revisado: 05-12-19
In today's interpretation of history Germany is a nation that must bare the guilt of some murderous mad man who assumed power through means of sedition and went on to try and take over the world. We're sort of encouraged to look at the German citizenry of the time to be in favor of genocide, and imperialism, This book puts a plethora of human faces on the people we've been told were "the bad guys". It shows they were normal people who were turned into the cudgel of the actual bad guys. The author does describe meeting people who bore our archetypal image of a German soldier who is barbarous, but he describes meeting a lot of people who were just normal people dragged into a terrible war. He wasn't in the SS so maybe that's why he wasn't engaging in barbarous acts, but I did feel compassion for the author and his comrades on the front lines.

Historia
First came the man: a young wanderer in a fatigue coat and long hair. Then came the legend, as John Rambo sprang from the pages of FIRST BLOOD to take his place in the American cultural landscape. This remarkable novel pits a young Vietnam veteran against a small-town cop who doesn't know whom he's dealing with - or how far Rambo will take him into a life-and-death struggle through the woods, hills, and caves of rural Kentucky.

Just as good as I thought it would be
Revisado: 05-12-19
First Blood and to a larger extent the Rambo Movies were very important to me when I was growing up. I hadn't seen them in a long time, but I remember hearing that it was originally based on a book. I found this book, and it was everything I hoped it would be. It deepened my appreciation for the movies with the exception of 3. After finishing the book I watched first blood part 1, and it was interesting to see what was done differently than what happened in the book. In the book Rambo kills more people, and more importantly the police chief is a more developed character. It's more about Rambo playing the role of guerilla fighter, and the police chief being an organized unit. As Morrell says it brings the Vietnam war to the small town in Kentucky. The movie and book place certain difficulties on Rambo that sort of balance out. Ultimately I can say that this book is not better or worse than the movie. I only have one complaint. The Narrator doesn't have the best Southern accent.

Don't judge a book by it's cover comes to mind.
Revisado: 05-03-19
So I was looking for something that was sort of like the book hatchet that I read in my youth. The story of survival really spoke to me when I was a kid in middle school, so I found this book. It is not as it seems. The cover shows a British soldier hiding behind a tree from a Japanese patrol in a jungle. The description says it's about how he has to traverse the Malaysian jungle in order to get privileged information back to the Allies all while helping a Eurasian woman and two English boys. "Alright those parameters might make for a good story." I thought. I listened to it for a long time, and found myself wondering, "when does the suspense come in?" then it dawned on me in the last 2 hours of the book that this is a romance novel, and I've wasted my time with this. Not finished yet, but honesty I feel like a fool.
