Historia
Veycosi, in training as a griot (an historian and musician), hopes to sail off to examine the rare Alamat Book of Light and thus secure a spot for himself on Chynchin’s Colloquium of scholars. However, unexpected events prevent that from happening. Fifteen Ymisen galleons arrive in the harbor to force a trade agreement on Chynchin. Veycosi tries to help, hoping to prove himself with a bold move, but quickly finds himself in way over his head.

magical!!
Revisado: 01-29-25
Nalo Hopkinson manages this incredible world building while simultaneously transporting me home. I loved this story as well as our problematic narrator, the political economy of the island, and our beautiful Oteng.

Historia
In an all too imaginable future, where the privileged lead lives untouched by wars that have become a global pastime, disenfranchised young people who “volunteer” to become super soldiers are injected with nano technology that repeatedly brings them back from death. In a race against time, one such soldier and an analyst struggle to understand strange phenomena that occur after too many resurrections: glitches known as nostalgia, which even in the midst of combat can hurtle a soldier into the past. But after eight, nine, even ten resurrections lies something much worse than just glitches.

the right kind of horrifying
Revisado: 12-02-23
Justina Ireland brings the (anti-) militarism, racialised/classed ethical questioning, and politics of reanimation together again in an entirely new fashion. This is the dystopic future-current, with tons of body horror, that exposes our interrelationality. I think it's particularly useful right now to question complicities, small acts of intervention, dehumanisation and trauma. This book delivers all of that while remaining super compelling, scientific, and retaining the necessary strangeness of sci-fi. The narrator offers a strong performance, too! 5/5

Historia
Abandoned by her family, alone on the wrong side of the color line with little to call her own, Eliza Meeks is coming to terms with what she does have. It’s a gift for communicating with animals. To some, she’s a magical tender. To others, a she-devil. To a talent prospector, she’s a crowd-drawing oddity. And the Bacchanal Carnival is Eliza’s ticket out of the swamp trap of Baton Rouge. Among fortune-tellers, carnies, barkers, and folks even stranger than herself, Eliza finds a new home. But the Bacchanal is no ordinary carnival. An ancient demon has a home there too.

Historia
Francesca Ekwuyasi’s debut novel tells the interwoven stories of twin sisters, Kehinde and Taiye, and their mother, Kambirinachi. Kambirinachi feels she was born an Ogbanje, a spirit that plagues families with misfortune by dying in childhood to cause its mother misery. She believes that she has made the unnatural choice of staying alive to love her human family and now lives in fear of the consequences of that decision.

fantastic performance, good story
Revisado: 09-03-23
I don't usually read family dramas (or anything that centres food or love), but this came highly recommended for a reason. It's a story that interweaves those three disinterests of mine in a way that is actually compelling. The book was touching and intense and the character's hurts and coping mechanisms became mine. I found the mother figure the most interesting; the obangje (unfortunate effect of listening to an audiobook is I have no idea how to spell the names)... but Taye and Kainde are both such empathetic characters. Worth noting: this narrator is amazing. I really loved her performance. The slight variations in accent and her sense of emotion were perfect.

brilliant performance for a layered book
Revisado: 01-31-23
Rivers Solomon offers another textured story with relevant and redeeming politics. I highly recommend to those who are captivated by body horror, Black history, disabled protagonists, complicated motherhood and general surreality.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Great story, major pacing issues
Revisado: 11-07-21
From this work, the author appears to be the lovechild of Nalo Hopkinson and NK Jemisin, but this story lacks a solid, committed editor. I love the world she built and the characters are mostly interesting, but the first 13 chapters could be summarized as a kid is upset that she doesn't have magic... The story doesn't really begin until chapter 15 or so, but when it does, it is worthwhile. Then when it kicks up, it is really fantastic. I'm ultimately glad I read it and would recommend to lovers of the genre. The latter half of the book is brilliant.

Best of the series!
Revisado: 01-24-20
The overall concept isn't the most creative, but the entire plot is infused with depth and innovation. The characters were brilliantly and carefully developed. There was never a moment that this story let up; it was always engaging, absolutely dripping with seductive substance. I loved it and look forward to checking out this author!! I went for this series for NK's story (which was wonderful), but honestly this one was my favourite!

Historia
Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him.

brilliant!!
Revisado: 09-30-19
I'm so happy I found this brilliant novel! It is compelling and draws you in right away. While the performance isn't from an actress, so lacking some of the voice variation that I have gotten used to with audiobooks, I think it is nice to hear from the author. I love the characters, especially the two men whose love for their mothers carried them to revolutionary action. With Bessa (sp?) I appreciate the nuanced writing of her "salvation" and what role Christianity played in her development. I also really appreciate the exposition of the complex, colonial dynamic brought by the repatriated Africans. There wasn't a blanket/simplified sentiment, but rather a careful consideration for the many characters of these people. Love it. Will use it to teach.
Absolute 5 stars for the novel.
