Fun Old Time Classics
Revisado: 01-22-25
I bought several of these collections just to have a good sampling of the early Sci-Fi radio programs in one place downloaded in a nice package. Most of the shows (and more) can be tracked down online. I would have rated the review higher than I did, but I was annoyed that only part one of Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, 2/7/52 - “Operation Hide and Seek” was included. Yes, I was able to track down part two online, but I shouldn't have had to. It doesn't seem to me that Black Eye Entertainment spent much time in curating their collections. A previous volume had an incomplete episode, and there was some duplication of stories.
Still a fun collection, but easily could have been better without much more real effort.

Fun Old Time stories but Chapter 5 is incomplete;
Revisado: 01-14-25
I do enjoy old time radio broadcasts, and I have listened to many of these in the past freely available on various web sites. Still, I bought this mainly to have a bunch of them which I could own and in one place. I was, sadly, disappointed with this particular product as Chapter 5, the Heinlein story, cuts off after 17 minutes into the story. This is an obvious defect and it should be pulled from sale and/or fixed by the publisher.

Excellent Adventure through the Limberlost
Revisado: 04-29-24
I greatly enjoyed this one, and excellent reading by Christina Moore. I did stopped halfway through to read the "prequel" Freckles, though. You wouldn't have to, but I was curious as to who this Freckles person was from the beginning, and, when a chapter started to more prominently feature information about the character, I thought it would be good to go read that one.

Unfortunately, their home is not quite up to Monk's standards of cleanliness and order. But while Monk attempts to arrange his surroundings just so, something else needs to be put straight. The death of a dog at the local firehouse - on the same night as a fatal house fire - has led Monk into a puzzling mystery.

It's Nice to Revisit with Monk
Revisado: 11-16-23
And while it doesn't line up exactly with what I remember with the Monk TV series, it's close enough and it's nice just to be able revisit the major characters from the series. The narrator does a good job, and while it would have been better to have had the TV actors reprise their actual roles, Laura Hicks fills in nicely for all of them.

I have no desire to have Unread it.
Revisado: 03-18-23
I found it enjoyable enough, and a quick read. I should point out that 'll read (or in this case, listen) to just about any Time Travel story; I like them by default, and have enjoyed dozens of them. And there was some freshness in this one, although I believe that the characters could have fleshed out more. And I'm not too sure that a book this short should have 125+ chapters in it. Not everything needed to move that quickly, especially when the characters do have some control over the pacing of time. The author probably should have covered less events and just picked a few, smaller ones and placed more meat on their bones.
But by all means, read it.

More a modern Netflix series than a 1950s novel
Revisado: 11-14-21
I stumbled upon this one as I was looking for some of Jack Vance's Dying Earth books, and I'm glad I did. I was a little slow getting into it (as Vance set up the world and the situation for the reader), but I was immediately drawn in once the main characters were introduced. And while the idea of an unyielding antihero was likely a harder sell when this was first published in 1956, it struck a cord with this reader (close to 60) in 2021. (It really would work well today as a Netflix series.) However, the ultimate solution arrived at the end seems to me like one of the first thing humans should have tried instead of what they did instead in this book. That didn't keep me from exploring their choices and enjoying the journey. Plus, it's rather nice to see a—more or less—ruthless antihero going up against an equally ruthless hero (and world system), people who seemed more destined to be lovers than enemies, each fully believing they're in the right and have been wronged by the other side.

This should be more well-known and regarded
Revisado: 10-24-21
An excellent read, and a book that deserves to be more well known and well read than it is. I can understand how the general audience would prefer Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but that certainly doesn't mean that LotR is better than The Broken Sword, especially if the reader is a fan of the Northern and other mythologies, which this work is based upon and is written as if it were one of the Sagas; even the poetry within is the correct style. (And I didn't skip over it like I did Tolkien's verses.)
Anyway… I wish I had heard of this book decades ago. I should have, and some of that is my fault. I should not assume that the Best-Of Fantasy Reading Lists out there are completely accurate. Some have glaring omissions, like this novel. Sometimes, we need to look deeper and find and judge more for ourselves.

Historia
A young blonde in sunglasses robs a bank and kills a hapless citizen. Across town, a corpse with a bullet shot through its heart is found in a locked room - with no gun at the scene. The crimes seem disparate, but to Martin Beck they are two pieces of the same puzzle, and solving it becomes the one way he can escape the pains of his failed marriage and the lingering effects of a near-fatal bullet wound.

My favorite of the Beck books so far
Revisado: 02-23-21
There's a lot to like about this one: Beck is back on the job after his previous injury, and he's working alone on case that previous members of the force have bungled. The rest of cast of characters are working (bungling) at trying to foil/capture bank robbers. As expected, Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö tell a good story that also funny and which contains a number of interesting characters. I'm giving the authors perfect marks although I'm not all that enamored with their social and political commentary, and I might have cut the last scene (as I felt it was overkill, and they had already done justice to that particular character's haunting bafflement already. This just cheapened it).
