impossible audio reference
Revisado: 01-10-25
I'm pretty amazed there are any positive reviews to this being an ideal audio selection. It's literally a glossary index of hundreds of IT terms. If you need a reference book, this might suit a curious looking up of something if you're trying to distinguish two closely related things. However, obviously it's impossible to search for the term you're looking for, and if you were going to listen to terms being defined you would need to constantly pause and rewind for clarity.
As an interesting read through of networking concepts, there is nothing here short of cramming for a test by listening to term-definition, term-definition. Plausible reference book to have on your desk, completely useless as an audiobook or teaching guide.

I'm gonna suggest this guy had the perfect voice for this particular diegesis of American conflicted relationship with growth. I can't imagine it sticking well for anybody the first time through, but it captures such a wide swath of history and implies such a depth of culpability it isn't challenging to look forward to going back through. His voice is just monotone enough to sound like he's reading a line item inventory which a quarter of the time is what the book boils down to. When he pivots into the storytelling he does manage to animate his voice to the purpose of the writing. I lost the thread a few times as to the milestones on the downward slide, but was surprised to learn how longstanding the countryside has been corporatized.

Historia
In 1936, George Orwell went to Spain to report on the civil war and instead joined the P.O.U.M. militia to fight against the Fascists. In this now justly famous account of his experience, he describes both the bleak and the comic aspects of trench warfare on the Aragon front, the Barcelona uprising in May 1937, his nearly fatal wounding just two weeks later, and his escape from Barcelona into France after the P.O.U.M. was suppressed.

I mean... Orwell is such a more captivating complement to Hemingway. The ruggedness in his prose both cordially carries along the reader and aloofly asserts the need for his perspective. He's so easy to absorb and addictively reckless. Could not recommend enough, great ground-level history lesson. The narrator is strikingly effete-sounding, but it feels wrong to judge him on that alone. Actually interesting to hear such a tony voice plead the case for Anarchism.

The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

just does not translate to audio
Revisado: 09-23-21
i love this story so much. bulgakov is a masterful writer and has a way of creating madness while going nowhere but in this audiobook it all just comes off as interminably repetitive.
it isn't the fault of the narrator though the British class accents are a little jarring to hear in a Russian story but not ridiculous.
it is read maybe a little too matter-of-factly but the character reactions also are more believable than when i read it myself.
i imagine them in more of a trance and hysterical tortured voices. characters also take some time to come back which involves flipping back and remembering who's who for me, a nonoption with the audio. and i just don't usually get this distracted with audiobooks which i think is just the manic nature of the story.
the randomness of the details and the briefness of much of the scenes makes it a strictly paper read for me. i wouldn't recommend the audio to others. i think it does the impossible and makes the fantastic boring. there's no reward in processing the madness cuz it just continues on like normal scenes would which is unnatural to the story. it needs to steep throughout.

Historia
The Internet was never intended for you, opines Brian McCullough in this lively narrative of an era that utterly transformed everything we thought we knew about technology. In How the Internet Happened, he chronicles the whole fascinating story for the first time, beginning in a dusty Illinois basement in 1993, when a group of college kids set off a once-in-an-epoch revolution with what would become the first "dotcom".

distractingly tonedeaf narrator but great content
Revisado: 03-25-21
Riveting history of how the internet came to be and the bloodbath that followed. The narrator chuckles along at wry humor and punctuates subtlety with perky optimism that seems to alter the intended tone of the book and meanings of certain phrases.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

A lot going on
Revisado: 12-02-20
Hard time bringing together several tangents per episode. The performances were a welcome delight and helped bring alive the discovery of the various secret lives. But there was so much circumnavigating and brief introductions of critical callbacks, I expect a re-listening would be favorable but at twelve hours there's just as much i expect would insist on ambivalence.

Historia
Sarah Vowell's special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, where "righteousness" is rhymed with "wilderness," to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. Throughout, The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America's most celebrated voices.

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Stunning and inspired
Revisado: 05-07-20
Ya know... I think it bears special mention here that a book will tend to have a certain primacy aloof from its being rendered in audio, because ermagerd, Armitage puts you in the painting that Dickens creates. It really can't be understated how much this is Dickens creation and the delicate care that goes into character development and weaving, but the narrator here, Richard Armitage, really goes through an exquisite flexibility, in fact, doing justice to the range and inventiveness of characterization that Dickens intended. It is so long to be understandable to think the book too intimidating, but for real, you will love the audiobook version but don't underestimate the power within the pages of the book that is all but entirely crystallized in this wonderful performance.

Historia
Penniless and downtrodden at the loss of his wife and one of his daughters, Samuel Clemens turned to writing. The short stories and essays in Letters from the Earth find Clemens—under the pseudonym of Mark Twain—at perhaps his most quizzical and questioning state ever. Written as diary entries, Twain penned a series of letters from the point of view of a dejected angel on Earth who observes the many curious natures of man. These pieces, gathered by Twain's literary executor, feature sharp takes on the inconsistencies of Christianity and farcical criticisms of American life.

So rare for me not to get it but care about it
Revisado: 01-19-12
Without a doubt, the historical aspect is absolutely lost on me without being able to better reference the names by looking at them. That being said it is so easy to lose yourself as a passenger in the hangover of audiobook life and listen to the swashbuckling half-lives, as it were, toward the end. Mean to better reference the names by way of Wikipedia or some such internet, but holding off listening to it a few more times to see if there isn't any interpretive static I can't lick off some futuristic headache in trying.
Listening about the devil's free time can be like that.
