Much better than I expected
Revisado: 06-05-24
I was worried that the author might feel compelled to add one more “kick in the gut” piece of drama such as the early death of a major character. The central plot was a bit weak, but then, this was a real goodbye and we love you book for the characters and readers alike and that takes awhile. The narration was flawless as ever. I do need to go back to my books & double check a Maisie fact, but not a real historical one. I do have one question for the author who really did an amazing job with this series so I’m not complaining…but did I miss the story on what Pricilla’s niece is doing “now?” She’s the only character I was wondering about last night when I could not sleep! Again, thanks, Jacqueline!!

A Must Listen for the Grieving
- De Chris en 09-25-23
His politics…connected to grief, how?
Revisado: 02-21-24
Being closely familiar with grief, I was very interested in listening to this. I like dark humor and so thought this could be a doubly good fit. It was not. I found nothing funny or sad in the opening or the first third of the show and so I gave it up. I could care less about his politics & discovered no connection to grief in his support of Bernie Saunders. I disagree with his support of my tax dollars erasing college loan debt. I don’t care that he was bad at musical theater and did not find anything about Betty Boop to be funny. I kept waiting and he just blathered on. Finally I gave up. Why Audible felt this was worth a listen confounds me. Richard Osmond’s mysteries are funny/heart breaking in such a memorable way. I cannot stop pondering them & that set the bar for this show as far as I am concerned. The difference is significant. Another Audible Original, Six Sermons, about suicide was also far more appealing! Perhaps other reviewers were helped by this production. I hope so.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Favorite narration of favorite novel!
Revisado: 07-02-23
Oh my! I have loved P & P all of my life. Rosamund Pike gives a magnificent performance here, creating excellent voices and perfect narration, so that I return to this recording over and over. Listening to the story has become like visiting with dear old friends. I cannot possibly praise this Audible book enough. If you love Jane Austen, you will love this recording and if you are new to her work, this book will lead you into Austen’s world in a wonderful way.

Narrator disappointing. Story fabulous!
Revisado: 09-27-22
I have to add my voice to those expressing sorrow in the change of narrators. I wonder why this decision was made. I found this narrator’s voice so very different and hard to adjust to hearing. I feel she missed the personalities of the characters we already knew & did not give the kind of attention to the new characters that they deserved. That being said, the story is terrific! I love the Penny Dreadful stories woven into each tale and as for the main story: wow! The ending was a huge surprise and there were twists in the plot I did not expect. Well done! Hoping there will be many more in this series!

One of her Best
Revisado: 10-20-19
Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my favorite authors and this story is on my short list of favorites, along with The Shell Seekers and Coming Home. For some reason, I really like Jilly Bond’s performance in this book, far better than in September. I’m not certain why, other than perhaps here, she tempers her Scottish brogue a bit more than in the other book. This one has become a classic to me & I will listen to it each winter. Pilcher is a master of words—developing believable characters and placing them eloquently in numerous settings amid plots that keep the reader guessing. This is a book to savor.

One of Heyer's Best
Revisado: 09-04-16
This is one of my favorite Georgette Heyer novels. It ranks high along with The Grand Sophy, Frederica, and The Talisman Ring. Each of these books contain a good bit of humor and Sylvester's plot is particularly engaging. I remember when reading it for the first time (40 years ago) I could not figure out how the book would end. It is an enjoyable clean read now just as it was when I was a teen. As always, her descriptions of attire, language usage, and all other aspects of the period are excellent and lend just the right amount of color to the book.
